Military vehicles on parade\u003cbr/\u003eAbout two (m) million Muslims from around the world have gathered in Mecca, Saudi Arabia, at the start of the annual hajj pilgrimage, with security forces at a heightened state of alert to ensure safe proceedings.\u003cbr/\u003eThe hajj forms one of the five central pillars of Islam and every Muslim who is fit and financially able is required to make the journey at least once in their lifetime.\u003cbr/\u003eThe pilgrims - men dressed in identical seamless white outfits and women covered except for their hands and faces - circle the Kaaba on Thursday, at the Grand Mosque, Islam's holiest site, in the first ritual of the pilgrimage, or hajj.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Kaaba is a large cubic structure that Muslims face during their five daily prayers. Muslims consider the Kaaba as the house of god and believe it was built by Ibrahim and his son Ismail.\u003cbr/\u003eWhile the sky was clear on Thursday, weather reports forecast cloudy skies and the possibility of rain on Friday.\u003cbr/\u003eBut Saudi authorities say they were fully prepared, with more than 2-thousand rescue vehicles and 118 boats at their disposal.\u003cbr/\u003eThirty hospitals and several health centres have also provided more than 150 ambulances and over 4-thousand beds.\u003cbr/\u003eAfter the visit to the Grand Mosque, which can hold 460-thousand people, the pilgrims head to Mina, where some 44-thousand white, fireproof tents have been set up at a cost of 2.4 billion riyals (US$640 million).\u003cbr/\u003eThe hajj has been marred by tragedies in the past. In 1997, a fire aided by high winds swept through Mina, killing more than 340 and injuring 1-thousand 500.\u003cbr/\u003eSo far about 1.3 (m) million pilgrims have arrived from outside Saudi Arabia, while they are expected to be joined by some half a million others from inside the kingdom.\u003cbr/\u003eThe hajj peaks on Saturday with prayers at Mount Arafat, a gentle hill 20 kilometres (12 miles) southwest of Mecca. The time spent at Mount Arafat is believed to symbolise Judgment Day, when Islam says every person will stand before god and answer for his deeds.\u003cbr/\u003eSecurity forces have been put on a heightened state of alert to ensure smooth and safe proceedings this year, while troops have been in training at a camp near Mount Arafat.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Saudi Arabian Interior Minister and head of the Hajj Organisation Committee asked everybody to respect the Hajj pilgrimage, but he said if anything did happen Saudi Arabia was ready to deal with
