Close of lit cigarette\u003cbr/\u003eGreece is the latest nation to adopt a public smoking ban. \u003cbr/\u003eUnrestricted indoor smoking in restaurants, bars, coffee shops and workplaces is now against the law, in the third ban Greece has tried to impose over the past decade.\u003cbr/\u003eBut it's a different story in Thailand where for the past 4 years it's been illegal to display cigarettes for sale.\u003cbr/\u003eIt's one of a number of measures that have helped win the country plaudits for its fight against smoking.\u003cbr/\u003eNadda Rattanalertkawin's been selling cigarettes in her Bangkok shop for twenty years. \u003cbr/\u003eBut in the last few years things have changed; these days after she restocks her display cabinet she pulls on a lever, and the packets are gone from view. \u003cbr/\u003eThat's the law in Thailand; no cigarettes on display at the point of sale. She says since the law came in, in 2005, her sales have fallen by half, and she's not happy about it.   \"It really annoys me,\" she says, \"it's just not convenient to sell them anymore.\"\u003cbr/\u003eThe World Health Organisation has singled Thailand out as a model for the rest of the world when it comes to tobacco control. \u003cbr/\u003eCampaigners say the number of smokers has dropped by 4 million since 1991 and tobacco sales are down by 20%.\u003cbr/\u003eOf course, it isn't simply down to the ban on shop displays; a raft of measures has been implemented over the past few years that have combined to tarnish smoking's appeal, including a ban on smoking in public places. \u003cbr/\u003eCampaigners say the display ban may be only a small part of that, but it's one that punches far above its weight. \u003cbr/\u003e\"We think this is one of the very important measures ďż˝ judging by the (way the) tobacco industry opposed this measure\" says Dr Prakit Vathesatogkit, one of Thailand's leading anti-smoking crusaders.\u003cbr/\u003eIt isn't just direct advertising that's banned. \u003cbr/\u003eVideo editor Sakpong Kerdkulchon begins the day's work at True Visions TV in Bangkok. \u003cbr/\u003eThe company is the national provider of satellite programming. \u003cbr/\u003eSakpong's job is to blur out any shots on any programmes or movies that show people smoking; no matter the relevance of smoking to the character or plot, in Thailand it's deemed indirect advertising of tobacco products and has to go. \u003cbr/\u003eThe effect isn't pretty and leads to complaints from viewers, but executives say the law is the law, even if it can appear oddly inconsistent.\u003cbr/\u003e\"In Thailand all the televisions and movies are unable to show smoking scenes, but we can show people holding the cigarette but when they smoke or are smoking we cannot show it\", says Settaporn Kanistanon, True Visions's Senior Manager for programme acquisitions.\u003cbr/\u003eStudent Phasoot Kerdkaew has been a smoker for 3 years. Now he's trying to give up. \u003cbr/\u003eThree months on and he's doing OK, thanks partly to frequent use of chewing gum to distract him but no thanks, he says, to the ban on shop displays. \u003cbr/\u003eA different weapon in the anti-smoking armoury has been far more effective. \u003cbr/\u003e\"The pictures of people with cancer on the packets - that's better. That makes me more concerned.\"\u003cbr/\u003eThat is indeed one of the most striking weapons in the crusade against tobacco in Thailand. \u003cbr/\u003eIt was one of the first countries to put graphic photos on packets, bashing smokers over the head with the risk they are running. \u003cbr/\u003eAuthorities will soon add new photographs and larger warning labels to keep up the pressure.\u003cbr/\u003ePerhaps the measure with the biggest effect of all on consumption has been regular tax hikes, pushing the cost of smoking higher and higher, especially for low-wage earners and the young. \u003cbr/\u003eThe current tax rate on a packet of cigarettes is 85%. But government officials believe the ban on shop displays has played its part.\u003cbr/\u003e\"When people want to go into a shop to buy cigarettes and they can't see any packets it helps reduce their desire because there's nothing there to make them want to smoke,\" says Panuwat Panket, the Director of the Ministry of Health's Bureau of Non-Communicable Disease.\u003cbr/\u003eThailand's approach may be getting results but, as counselors at the national telephone helpline know, there are still a lot of smokers out there. \u003cbr/\u003eIn the first 4 months of the year almost 2500 people called in asking for advice on how to quit. \u003cbr/\u003eOfficials have set themselves the goal of cutting the number of smokers by one per cent per year and in that fight they believe every measure can help, no matter how small.\u003cbr/\u003eRepresentatives from the tobacco industry in Thailand failed to respond to requests for comments for this
