Various of boats and yachts at anchor
The seas around the Spanish islands of Ibiza and Formentera boast one of the world's biggest areas of a special kind of seagrass.
It's an important part of the fragile marine ecology of the region but is being torn apart by hundreds of tourist yachts anchoring here each summer.
Another holiday season on the Spanish island of Ibiza and its smaller sister Formentera is coming to an end.
Pirates once roamed these coasts but today the treasure that lies beneath the waves is a natural resource.
The clear turquoise waters that attract so many tourists are partly down to the presence of a seagrass called posidonia oceanica.
Posidonia meadows play a key role in assuring the biodiversity and oxygenation of the sea around them.
But the constant anchoring of boats into the seagrass meadows has started to kill many of the plants around the islands.
There are 50,000 square kilometres (19,000 square miles) of posidonia meadows in the Mediterranean Sea, 5 percent of them in the Balearic Islands.
In 2006 a team of scientists from the University of the Balearic Islands recorded a posidonia specimen measuring eight kilometres (5 miles). It's thought to have been alive for 100,000 years.
In 1991 the autonomous government decided to protect the strait between the two islands by creating the Ses Salines Natural Park.
At this meadow - also declared a World Patrimony by UNESCO in 1999 - there are 100 million specimens of posidonia.
Posidonia inhabits the Mediterranean and Caribbean seas, but it is particularly prolific around Ibiza and Formentera. The seabeds average a depth of 18 metres (60 feet) but can reach as deep as 50 metres (165 feet).
Degradation of posidonia reduces basic functions of the submarine meadows including their capacity to recapture CO2 - almost half million tons a year - as well as retain sediment, filter particles and prevent erosion of the islands' beautiful beaches.
Every morning an environmental patrol leaves the port of Formentera and navigates the area advising owners of yachts and yachts not to throw their anchors into areas where they can see plants in the water.
Local environmental agent Toni Sala says: "The area is badly damaged because of indiscriminate anchoring. The vessels anchor over the posidonia and when they weigh anchor they damage the submarine posidonia forest."
The damage to the posidonia happens when the anchor is lifted out of the water again. The anchors drag the plant from the seabed in large chunks.
Spanish tourist Alberto Ubago says he is very concerned about the situation of the posidonia, but in this case strong winds prevented him from anchoring at a clear spot:
"We usually don't anchor where there is seaweed. Mainly because there are a lot of vessels and we will destroy it. We usually try to anchor at seaweed-free locations, but sometimes the weather and the sea complicate things. But it is clear we need to protect it."
But not everybody reacts in the same way. As of next year people found damaging the posidonia will be liable to a fine ranging from Euro 100,000 (USD 138,000) to 450,000 euro (USD 623,000).
But for now this Argentinean tourist gets angry when asked to move his yacht and starts arguing with the agent.
Every summer the Weyel family arrive in Formentera on their yacht from their hometown in northern Germany.
Ute and her husband Klaus are so worried about the degradation of the posidonia they spend part of their day telling fellow sailors to take care when throwing anchors at this cove.
Ute Weyel says: "We come to Formentera very often and it makes us very sad when we see people throwing anchors without checking whether there is sand or not. We know that the posidonia needs many years (to regrow)."
Italian tourist Cesare Tornielli is in Formentera for the first time.
He says he is surprised to find that anchor buoys have not been fitted in the waters:
"In Italy, Spain and Greece there is the problem of the posidonia. The solution is anchor buoys. It's the only solution. I thought that I would find them here, but there aren't any. So people are forced to anchor in the posidonia. I think with a collective effort the problem can be solved."
The local government has announced that 250 anchor buoys will be distributed evenly around Ses Salines Natural Park in time for the 2012 summer season. The annual cost for installing and maintaining them is estimated at 800,000 Euro (USD 1.1 (m) million dollars).
Marine biologist Manu San Felix says the survival of the posidonia is the responsibility of everyone:
"We are many humans and we have achieved a great level of development. And this comes at a cost when it comes to damaging and altering nature. All those issues that affect the planet also take place here at Ses Salines (Natural Park). There must be a most strict policy from the authorities as well as a change of habits from both us living here and those who come to stay temporarily."
700 square kilometres (270 square miles) of posidonia meadows have been destroyed so far in this natural park.
According to San Felix, posidonia meadows in the Mediterranean disappear at a rate of five percent every year. The average globally ranges from 1 to 2 percent.
Posidonia grows around two centimetres each year. Throwing an anchor over it takes only a few seconds but causes damage that takes years for nature to repair.

<div class='action-container flex
