The community of artisans and spiritualists had been\u003cbr/\u003esecretly building their underground kingdom, near Turin in\u003cbr/\u003eValchiusella, since 1977 when 12 founding members axed their way\u003cbr/\u003einto the mountain face to build a place for meditation. Now that\u003cbr/\u003eit has been discovered the community of Damanhur, named after an\u003cbr/\u003eancient Egypt city, is battling to save its \"Temple of Man\".\u003cbr/\u003eDamanhur is home to almost 600 people: a \"mini-state\" complete\u003cbr/\u003ewith it's own currency, government, laws and schools. It's\u003cbr/\u003efounder, Oberto Airaudi stated: \"We're not a religious sect, we\u003cbr/\u003estudy magic and the esoteric and have placed mankind at the heart\u003cbr/\u003eof things\". The community is almost self-sufficient carrying out\u003cbr/\u003esome 40 different small enterprises - making everything from\u003cbr/\u003ejewellery, food and clothing with unique metal designs. Access to\u003cbr/\u003ethe complex is gained through a small wooden door on the side of a\u003cbr/\u003ehilltop house which leads to a corridor with paintings drawn from\u003cbr/\u003eEgyptian mythology.
