healthy. \u003cbr/\u003eBut now a team of scientists from Barcelona's Metropolitan Institute of Medical Investigation (IMIM) and Hospital del Mar say that they can show why a typical Mediterranean diet rich in olive oil can help prevent the risk of suffering cardiovascular diseases. \u003cbr/\u003eCardiovascular disease are the one of the main causes of death in Western Europe. \u003cbr/\u003eBut statistics show that many more people die in the United Kingdom than in Spain from heart or circulatory disease. \u003cbr/\u003eThe British Heart Foundation (BHF) says that cardiovascular disease is the UK's biggest killer, accounting for  just over 216,000 deaths in the UK in 2004 - around four out of every ten deaths. \u003cbr/\u003eHowever in Spain the numbers appear to be greatly reduced. \u003cbr/\u003eThe BFH say that in 2000, 29 in 100,000 Spanish women (aged 35- 74) died of heart disease, compared to 80 in 100,000 UK women and in the same year 113 in 100,000 Spanish men died of heart disease (aged 35-74), compared to 229 UK men in 100,000. \u003cbr/\u003ePeople in mediterranean countries like Spain consume high amounts of fat (at least 35 % of consumed energy comes from fat) mainly as mono-unsaturated fatty acids present in olive oil.\u003cbr/\u003eA team of scientist from Barcelona's Metropolitan Institute of Medical Investigation (IMIM),  led by Doctor Maria Isabel Covas, followed over three-months the diet of a group of 372 people aged between 55 and 80 who had high risk of suffering a cardiovascular disease.\u003cbr/\u003eThe study showed that a traditional Mediterranean diet containing olive oil helps to reduce the chance of developing heart disease.\u003cbr/\u003eVirgin olive oil, often found in Mediterranean dishes has strong antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. \u003cbr/\u003eThe participants - 210 women and 162 men, aged between 55-80 years - had at least one of the known factors for cardiovascular risk: hyper tension, diabetes, obesity or a family history of heart disease.\u003cbr/\u003eParticipants were divided in three groups: one followed a low fat diet, the second a Mediterranean diet rich in fruits, vegetables, fish and olive oil and the third group followed a Mediterranean diet rich in nuts and dried fruits.\u003cbr/\u003eDoctor Maria Isabel Covas says that the results showed that the both groups who were eating the Mediterranean diet showed a decrease in the level of oxidation of LDL cholesterol which can be harmful and lead to heart disease. \u003cbr/\u003eThe group using extra olive oil showed a slightly greater reduction in the level of oxidation of LDL cholesterol than the group eating nuts and dried fruit.  \u003cbr/\u003eNuts are another antioxidant which are popular in Mediterranean diets. \u003cbr/\u003eHowever the group eating a low fat diet did not show the same reduction of the level of oxidation of LDL cholesterol as the other two groups. \u003cbr/\u003eCovas says the study suggests that although the 'Mediterranean diet is rich in fat, it can prevent an important cause of cardiovascular disease which is the oxidation of low density lipo proteins.'\u003cbr/\u003eThe theory is that by eating food rich in anti-oxidants the free radicals could be reduced preventing oxidation. i.e. eating fruit and vegetables.\u003cbr/\u003eNevertheless, the oxidation of \"bad\" cholesterol was also satisfactory among those who had a low fat diet, but not as reduced as the other two groups. \u003cbr/\u003eHowever Covas also stressed (off camera) that the cardioprotective effects of the Mediterranean diet can also be attributed to improving important cholesterol ratios, as well as the effects on blood pressure and inflammation. \u003cbr/\u003eShe says that in order to stay healthy she recommends eating three pieces of fruit each day, one or more portion of vegetables, olive oil and avoid processed breads and fats. \u003cbr/\u003eSteffi Muller from Germany says her Spanish mother cooked in the traditional mediterranean way. \u003cbr/\u003eBut she thinks that we can't generalise about national diets and conclude that one is better than the other. \u003cbr/\u003eJoseba Pisteguia, a nutritionist agrees that not everyone in Spain eats a healthy diet and it is difficult to draw general conclusions like the one in the study. \u003cbr/\u003eChef Manuel Borandell uses plenty of fresh fish, vegetables and olive oil to prepare Spain's favourite snacks at his tapas restaurant. \u003cbr/\u003eHe says that Mediterranean food is becoming popular across the world from New York to Tokyo and people are following the healthy style of cooking. \u003cbr/\u003eCarrie Smith a visitor from the United States agrees and says she will miss the food here. \u003cbr/\u003eShe thinks there are not many obese people in Spain as people here lead an active lifestyle. \u003cbr/\u003eThis study concludes that the Mediterranean diet can decrease the chances of suffering cardiovascular diseases when compared to a low-fat diet among older patients who are at high risk for cardiovascular disease.\u003cbr/\u003eThe investigation is part of a ongoing wider project called PREDIMED (Prevention with Mediterranean Diet), a project in which involves 9, 000 people across ten medical centres in Spain. \u003cbr/\u003eThe results of this study were presented recently at the European Atherosclerosis Society 76th Congress in Helsinki, Finland, and are published in the June 11, 2007  issue of the Archives of Internal Medicine.\u003cbr/\u003eA lipoprotein is a molecule that carries fat and protein. \u003cbr/\u003eLow density lipoprotein (LDL) is 'bad cholesterol'. \u003cbr/\u003eIf a lipoprotein loses an electron due to a free radical cell it can oxidise. \u003cbr/\u003eOxidisation, along with inflammation are two of the processes thought to be partly responsible for the development of atherosclerosis. \u003cbr/\u003eAtherosclerosis is the fatty hardened build up that causes narrowing of the arteries, which is called coronary heart disease. \u003cbr/\u003eThe idea is that by eating food rich in anti-oxidants the free radicals could
