And my friend had a magazine and she said 'well if you get a girl gang, a fat girl gang together, we can put you in our magazine.' So that's exactly what happened. But people who weren't girls also wanted to be involved. So I thought, \"well, it doesn't matter if you're a girl or not, if you're fat or not - be in a gang. Doesn't matter if you're violent or vicious or not, or calm or sweet - be in a gang. So we use iconography to get the message of fat activism across.\"\u003cbr/\u003e7. Singer Chopin Gard singing 'Make Your Own Kind of Music' by Mama Cass Elliot, the audience applauds.\u003cbr/\u003eLike many cultures in the West, the pressure on women to be thin is immense in the UK.\u003cbr/\u003eNow a group of 'fat activists' are reclaiming the right to be overweight and proud.  \u003cbr/\u003eIn one of a series of theatrical protests, The Chubsters - as they call themselves - are fighting back.\u003cbr/\u003eBeth Ditto - one of the hottest names in music and on the celebrity circuit. \u003cbr/\u003eThe American singer fronts up the band, The Gossip. She's also a keen supporter of the positive body image, often wearing revealing outfits while on stage. The twenty eight year old has even posed naked on the front of a magazine. \u003cbr/\u003eReaction in the media has been mixed. Some reports have called her fabulous. While others have labelled her simply as fat.\u003cbr/\u003eHer image goes against what the fashion industry promotes - the perfect size 10 (US size 8, European size 38).\u003cbr/\u003eBut British department store John Lewis says their top selling size is a 14 (US size 12/ European size 40-44) and that the biggest size they stock is a 24 (US size 22/ European size 50-54).\u003cbr/\u003eNow in the UK a group of 'fat activists' have formed a theatrical gang to highlight the issue and promote positive images of overweight people.\u003cbr/\u003e'The Chubsters'  - as they call themselves - recently 'highjacked' the London Lesbian and Gay film festival.\u003cbr/\u003eAt the 'Chubsters Invasion', festival goers were invited to sign up and pledge allegiance to the Chubsters gang. \u003cbr/\u003eMembership involves declaring loyalty to fat people and displaying the 'doughnut hands' gang symbol with their fists for a commemorative photograph.\u003cbr/\u003eKay Hyatt, one of the activists involved, says the event is going well and that she's been very busy making membership cards for the long line of people wanting to join.\u003cbr/\u003eCharlotte Cooper is the brainchild behind the gang.\u003cbr/\u003eAs well as an activist, Cooper is currently a PhD scholar at the University of Limerick in Ireland, researching the relationship between fat, healthcare and discrimination.\u003cbr/\u003eShe says that the idea came from a girl gang film she had seen, which she thought would make a good idea for a real life fat activist collective.\u003cbr/\u003eShe decided that the gang should be open to supporters of fat activists as well and that iconography plays a big part in gang philosophy.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Chubsters went to some considerable lengths to consolidate their image. \u003cbr/\u003eA logo named 'the screaming C' with jagged bloody teeth and snarl was designed to reflect the ferocity with which The Chubsters hold their anti-fat discrimination beliefs; it also ties in with Cooper's interest in iconography.\u003cbr/\u003eResponses to the Chubsters have been largely very positive from members of the public and film goers alike.\u003cbr/\u003eCorinna Tomiley says that she resisted joining the gang online as she wanted to experience the physical induction that the Chubsters perform on new members.  \u003cbr/\u003eThe Chubsters don't shy away from manhandling their new members and an integral part of the membership process is the 'jumping in' of new members.\u003cbr/\u003eThis is where 'newbies' are body slammed by the organisers and as final 'stamp of approval'.\u003cbr/\u003eNew members clearly enjoy this part often asking to be jumped in more than once.\u003cbr/\u003eCooper says that she had reservations about how popular this event would be because of it's slight obscure and comic nature. \u003cbr/\u003eAll of her fears however, she says, proved to be unfounded and that the event was a roaring success.\u003cbr/\u003eIn a musical tribute to legendary voluptuous singing star Mama Cass Elliot, Chubsters performer Chopin Gard performed his version of 'Make Your Own Kind of Music' to an enthusiastic audience.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Chubsters do welcome men and people of different sizes to join their 'gang'.\u003cbr/\u003eEditors notes: \u003cbr/\u003eIn a report published by Britain's National Health Service in 2008 called 'Statistics on Obesity, Activity and Diet', it was reported that 24% of adults (aged 16 or over) in England were classified as obese in 2006. \u003cbr/\u003eThis represented an overall increase from 15% in 1993.\u003cbr/\u003eIt went on to say that men and women were equally likely to be obese, however women were more likely than men to be morbidly obese (3% compared to 1%).\u003cbr/\u003eFurthermore 37% of adults had a raised waist circumference in 2006 compared to 23% in 1993.\u003cbr/\u003e\u003c/span\u003e\n\u003c/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv
