Detailed data sent back to earth since 1991 by the orbiting Upper Atmosphere Research Satellite (UARS), the largest environmental monitor ever built, prove what NASA and other scientists have long suspected: the ozone hole is caused by chlorofluorocarbons, or CFCs, the widely used chlorine compound chemical group. By process of elimination, National Aeronautics and Space Administration scientists found that the ozone-destroying acids detected by the satellite could only be caused by industrial gases since they do not occur naturally. CFCs are used as anti-freeze, insulation and as refrigerants. Their common ingredient is chlorine. CFCs are being phased out slowly under international agreements. Scientists fear that too much ozone depletion could send the swirling hole northwards over more populated tropical and mid-latitude climes, instead of the near-empty South Polar region. \u003cbr/\u003e(GODDARD SPACEFLIGHT CENTER, USA) Project scientist for the Upper Atmosphere Research Satellite, Mark Schoeberl, saying the amount of hydrogen fluoride measured by the satellite corresponds directly to the amount of chlorofluorocarbons in the atmosphere. And the \"clo\" atom can than react with an \"o\" and you form an \"02\" back again instead of forming an ozone molecule, and the \"cl\" is free again and it can destroy more ozone molecules.
