Wide shot room\u003cbr/\u003eThe Afghan Ambassador to the United States on Wednesday called for Germany to conduct an investigation into a photo allegedly showing German troops in Afghanistan posing with a human skull.\u003cbr/\u003eSpeaking in New York, Said Tayeb Jawad said an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the photos would reflect well on the the institutions they belong to and the country that they serve. \u003cbr/\u003eHe said a sensibility to the culture and values of the countries Western troops were based in would be important to countering the \"public relations campaign\" being conducted by forces who were \"against humanity, against freedom.\"\u003cbr/\u003eEarlier on Wednesday German officials expressed horror at the photos and vowed that any soldiers found to be involved would be punished.\u003cbr/\u003eGerman Defence Minister Josef Jung said such behaviour by German soldiers could not be tolerated.\u003cbr/\u003eHe promised an investigation, adding that if the incident were confirmed those involved would face disciplinary or even criminal measures.\u003cbr/\u003eGerman Chancellor Angela Merkel also condemned the images.\u003cbr/\u003eThe pictures were printed in Germany's biggest-selling newspaper, Bild Zeitung, which claimed they showed German peacekeepers near the capital, Kabul, in early 2003.\u003cbr/\u003eThe uniformed men could apparently be seen holding up the skull and posing with it on a jeep; one is seen apparently exposing himself with the skull. \u003cbr/\u003eThe newspaper said it was unclear where the skull came from, or whether it belonged to an Afghan or dated back to the Soviet occupation in the 1980s. \u003cbr/\u003eIt also did not say how it obtained the photos.\u003cbr/\u003eDespite the furore caused by the publication of the pictures, Ambassador Jawad praised the work foreign troops were doing in his country:\u003cbr/\u003e\"The foreign troop presence in Afghanistan are doing an important, a very important historic job, they're not only defending Afghanistan, their own country and the West, they're representing certain values that are important in order to fight the war against terrorism effectively,\" he said.\u003cbr/\u003eGermany is proud of its post-World War II military training rules, which reflect lessons drawn from the Nazi era by urging soldiers to take responsibility for their actions.\u003cbr/\u003eThe country currently has about 2,800 troops in NATO's International Security Assistance Force, or ISAF, in Afghanistan.\u003cbr/\u003eJawad stressed that he felt it was important for foreign troops to stay the distance in Afghanistan and how there would be disappointment for the country's people if the international community and Afghan government
