We are always waiting for the time the show comes on. We wait for Betty and then we sit and watch it but the time becomes too short. \"\u003cbr/\u003eSUPERCAPTION: Sonia Diaz, fan\u003cbr/\u003eThe success came as a surprise to those involved in the show.\u003cbr/\u003eMost Latin American soap operas are serious dramas, with beautiful actors living dramatic situations.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Betty\" deals with life in a Colombian office, the main character suffers humiliations, unrequited love with her boss, and cruelty at the hands of others.\u003cbr/\u003eHowever, what sets \"Betty\" apart is its sense of humour.\u003cbr/\u003eMore than anything else, \"Betty\" which is shown for half an hour 5 nights a week in Colombia, is a comedy.\u003cbr/\u003eDirector Mario Rivero says what has made it a runaway success is that it tapped into a part of every person which feels unattractive and thwarted.\u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE: (Spanish)\u003cbr/\u003e\"It hit of a theme latent in our society, latent in the world. Initially we thought this was something of ours, very Colombian, but now we see that it crossed frontiers. And there is the magic of a writer, to find something that resonates with people, which hasn't been done before, and all of a sudden people see it and say 'Of course, that is the way we are'\".\u003cbr/\u003eSUPERCAPTION: Mario Rivero, director\u003cbr/\u003eThe show was created by Fernando Gaitan, who also wrote other Colombian soap hits such as 'Coffee and the Aroma of a Woman'.\u003cbr/\u003eHe writes every single chapter of the show often staying up till 6 AM in the morning to do it.\u003cbr/\u003eHe says that the show demonstrates a parallel Colombia, sanitized of the brutal civil war which is happening here.\u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE: (Spanish)\u003cbr/\u003e\"When they see the show, they say this cannot be Colombia. They Haven't kidnapped Armando Mendoza, they haven't raped Betty, there is no drug trafficking, where are the paramilitaries? But the thing is that despite this tragedy here, we live our lives. We continue to work, we love, we cry when someone has left us, we catch a whiff of perfume, we love our parents, we go to the movies, in the midst of this tragedy, we live.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSUPERCAPTION: SOUNDBITE: (Spanish) Fernando Gaitan, writer and creator of \"Betty La Fea'\u003cbr/\u003eGaitan says he wanted to create a character in direct opposite to the tradition soap formula.\u003cbr/\u003eIn Colombia, which has hundreds of beauty pageants each year, physical beauty is highly prized.\u003cbr/\u003eBut Gaitan says that this is a false image and that most woman out there are not supermodels, hence the appeal of Betty.\u003cbr/\u003eDespite the runaway success though, Latin American soaps have a finite run of time.\u003cbr/\u003eAlready \"Betty\" has been extended for a few more months, but soon the show will end.\u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE: (Spanish)\u003cbr/\u003e\"I have a house on the outskirts of Bogota, with a hammock. And in that hammock I'm going to sleep until my body tells me the opposite. One month, two months, whatever. That is what I have been lacking -- sleep.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSUPERCAPTION: Fernando Gaitan, writer and creator of \"Betty La Fea'\u003cbr/\u003eSleep aside there is still a great deal to be done.\u003cbr/\u003eBetty is slowly becoming more beautiful and she is exacting revenge on her feckless boss and lover Armando.\u003cbr/\u003eActress Ana Maria Orozco, says that the show's success has surprised her and she hasn't had time to assimilate what is happening.\u003cbr/\u003eFormally a relatively unknown actress, everywhere she goes now she is recognised and on any given day there are at least 3 television crews waiting to interview her from as far away as the U-S and Argentina.\u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE: (Spanish)\u003cbr/\u003e\"I haven't had a chance to really assimilate what happened and to see it objectively because I continue taping the show. When it finished I'll be able to see the dimension. It has surprised me and sometimes overwhelmed me as well because I wasn't expecting this. I have had some proposals, offers, but I want to take it slowly. I have been working straight for a year and a half so I want to rest more than anything. I want to analyse calmly the new proposals. I don't know exactly were I'll go, I don't know what will happen for sure but the first thing is rest.
