And as one of the areas of concern in terms of failure to comply with the agreement is the question of paramilitary activity. So we therefore welcome the suggestion that emerged just immediately before the meetings in Northern Ireland last week that a body be created who's job it would be to oversee and to monitor cease fires, paramilitary activities, and indeed other matters as well. Trimble walking away at end of press conference \u003cbr/\u003eNorthern Ireland's leading protestant politician, David Trimble, on Friday called on the Irish Republican Army (IRA) to prove it has renounced violence.\u003cbr/\u003eTrimble is leader of the Ulster Unionist Party and former Northern Ireland First Minister. \u003cbr/\u003eBut the Catholic-Protestant government he headed was suspended by the British government in October last year after police uncovered evidence of an IRA spying operation inside the government. \u003cbr/\u003eSpeaking on Friday at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C., he offered some hope for a resolution of the Northern Ireland conflict. \u003cbr/\u003eProtestants are calling for the creation of a verification commission with representatives from Britain, the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland. \u003cbr/\u003eThe commission would monitor whether the IRA is abstaining from intelligence gathering, weapons smuggling or other prohibited activities. \u003cbr/\u003eRepublican party Sinn Fein could be removed from the government if the IRA violated the agreement.\u003cbr/\u003eBut Sinn Fein has said it would not accept new restrictions on its right to hold office.\u003cbr/\u003eTrimble and other Northern Ireland and Irish leaders have been in Washington, meeting with President Bush and other U.S. officials ahead of St. Patrick's Day (March 17).\u003cbr/\u003eTrimble praised Bush and British Prime Minister Tony Blair for continuing their work to resolve the Northern Ireland conflict, even while they are dealing with a possible war
