Martin Luther King Jr.'s \"I Have a Dream\" speech. \u003cbr/\u003eThe original March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom was held on August 28, 1963. \u003cbr/\u003eBarbara Carter of Linden, New Jersey, saw the March as being the culmination of the struggles and the push for civil rights and racial equality.\u003cbr/\u003e\"And so the March was the final stamp, the final stamp on the struggle,\" she said\u003cbr/\u003eCivil Rights Activist Jesse Jackson, said that despite much positive change, there was still much to fight for.\u003cbr/\u003e\"We need to revive the war on poverty, we need to engage in student loan debt, and some plan for urban reconstruction. Today we need not so much motivation as we need legislation and appropriation,\" he commented.\u003cbr/\u003eThe former head of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) called on those present to remember all those who had participated in the struggle for civil rights.\u003cbr/\u003e\"The successful strategies of the modern movement were litigation, organisation, mobilisation and coalition, all aimed at creating a national constituency for civil rights,\"  Julian Bond said.\u003cbr/\u003eAnd Kevin Powell of New York, one of Saturday's participants underlined the impact of the struggles of 1963 saying: \"This is a great honour. I would not be here if it weren't for the civil rights movement, for the work of Dr. King and many other people back in the 1950s and 1960s.\"\u003cbr/\u003eHe said he was attending the commemorations \"because I want to see people of all different backgrounds, black, white, Latino, Asian, come together and understand that the only way our country can be a great, great democracy is if we work together as sisters and brothers.\"\u003cbr/\u003eAt the conclusion of Saturday morning's speeches, participants were set to walk the half-mile from the Lincoln Memorial to the 2-year-old Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial.\u003cbr/\u003eOrganisers hoped the event would inspire people again to educate themselves about issues they see as making up the modern civil rights struggle.\u003cbr/\u003e1.
