of the country's poorest people.\u003cbr/\u003e'Arte Villa' in Buenos Aires aims to promote an alternative to a life of violence, prostitution and drugs that is all too common in a shantytown teeming with over 40,000 of Argentina's most marginalised people.\u003cbr/\u003e' Stars', one of the 15 films made by the Arte Villa.\u003cbr/\u003eThese residents from the Villa 21 Barracas are taking part in a movie that aims to offer hope to the destitute.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Arte Villa theatre group bangs out the rhythm of the 'murga' - the carnival theatre performance provides the centrepiece to this latest movie.\u003cbr/\u003eTo the over 40,000 residents of one of Buenos Aires's largest and most precarious shantytown the beat provides a natural soundtrack to their impoverished existence.\u003cbr/\u003eOften referred to as Argentina's invisible people these people feel their escape from a life of misery and frustration lies in becoming stars of the big and small screen. \u003cbr/\u003eJorge Segovia, one resident who can't write his own name, is one of the protagonists in Arte Villa's band of shantytown stars. \u003cbr/\u003eHe says the project aims to give a hand up rather than a hand out to these youths.\u003cbr/\u003eAs well as scripting and producing their own short films Arte Villa is a meeting point for the residents of the area, and directors who want to produce their work in a living breathing set.\u003cbr/\u003eThe project has been in existence since 1987, started by Julio Arrieta, 'a villero', a poor man, and a squatter with a like for acting.\u003cbr/\u003eArrieta began by doing street theatre and acting as a clown for kids, he now runs the production company from his house in the shantytown.\u003cbr/\u003eRespected both inside and outside the area, Julio says the idea is to turn the cameras onto the cultural character of his home and his community.\u003cbr/\u003eOffering characters that with no amount of make-up or method acting could be recreated in Hollywood, both national and international film makers are taking note.\u003cbr/\u003eMarcos Martinez is one director who was captivated by this billing.\u003cbr/\u003eBack in 2007 he worked with Arte Villa on an internationally successful film called Stars.\u003cbr/\u003eThe film, which toured the world and was presented at film festivals such as Cannes, is based on the idea of aliens invading the Shantytown.\u003cbr/\u003eIt reflects how the members of Arte Villa not only saved humankind but saved themselves from a life of misery.\u003cbr/\u003eMartinez says casting 'villeros', slum dwellers as heroes,  turned every clichÄÅ¼Ë on its head.\u003cbr/\u003eBuenos Aires's mushrooming shanty towns increasingly surface beside railroad tracks, appear under bridges and surround city dumps.\u003cbr/\u003eWith their labyrinthine alleys and ramshackle houses the areas have become a byword for social problems.\u003cbr/\u003eA study by the University of Buenos Aires back in 2006 found that 82% of the children living in the Villa 21 have intestinal parasites, largely due to the lack of proper sanitary.\u003cbr/\u003eAlicia Gillone, health commission coordinator from the NGO, the permanent Assembly for Human rights (APDH) in Argentina says the problems of these shantytowns are worsening daily.\u003cbr/\u003eWhile the members of Arte Villa are driven by the money they can earn from being involved, education is key to the project.\u003cbr/\u003eJulio Arrieta runs regular acting classes which promote elocution, participation and the building of self esteem. \u003cbr/\u003eThe motto of the class is that cultivated people are much harder to manipulate.\u003cbr/\u003eJulio says acting is a key tool for the slum dweller in the battle against the odds to maintain their dignity.\u003cbr/\u003eHis own dream now is to produce a soap opera entirely based on life in the shantytown.\u003cbr/\u003eHe wants it to focus on ordinary people's everyday lives, a place where a slum dweller, a garbage collector or a bricklayer can be the
