Various of the memorial statue built by the survivors adjacent to the Union Carbide Corporation factory wall
22. Various of the plant inside the Union Carbide Corporation factory from which the poisonous gas was leaked
Survivors of the world's worst industrial accident have seized on the London Olympic Games to try to highlight their plight in front of the world.
Thousands of people died and as many as half a (m) million were sickened more than 27 years ago when clouds of lethal gas escaped from a Union Carbide chemical plant in Bhopal, India, and swept across the nearby ramshackle homes.
The survivors, with their lingering illnesses, sick children and dead relatives, faded away from the world's memory, even as their suffering went on.
Now, though they are demanding that India boycott the London games.
They accuse Olympic sponsor Dow Chemicals, which purchased Union Carbide in 2000, of owing them compensation for their sorrow. The chemical giant disputes that.
The survivors ordeal however continues and many residents of Bhopal are still receiving medical treatment for their illnesses.
Activists say that thousands of children, born to parents directly exposed to the gas leak or poisoned by the contaminated water, are suffering from various degrees of brain damage, cerebral palsy, stunted growth, cleft lips, missing palates, cancer and breathing disorders.
Chingari Rehabilitation Centre, a non-profit organisation in the city provides facilities for physical and speech therapy to help affected children.
Four-year-old Subhana attends the centre to receive help for her sensory disorder problem and the three-year-old Mohammed Imran Ali, receives physiotherapy sessions for his thin, twisted limbs.
Chingari, which means "spark" in Hindi, is being run by two survivors of the incident.
The centre reflects the scars left on Bhopal's minds and bodies which are far from healed.
"There are at least hundred and fifty thousand people with chronic illnesses as a result of their exposure to the toxic gases. And now we know that the next generation is also marked by Union Carbide's poisons," Satinath Sarangi, director of Sambhavna Trust, another clinic for the affected said.
Bal Krishna Namdev, a 55-year-old survivor, is also an activist for other victims.
He is still under treatment for severe breathing problems.
"We did not get suitable treatment nor did we get appropriate compensation. Despite all this, we have kept our struggle going. We are hopelessly troubled, and I am still sick. I have so many medicines and I am fed up of taking all these," he said.
Even today it's unlikely to walk past a dozen houses in the narrow alleys of the poor areas that circle the compound of the old pesticide factory without finding a family caring for a child with twisted limbs.
Sanjay Yadav is a survivor whose two sons Vikas, 13 and Aman, 11 are suffering from deformities.
"If Dow is involved in the Olympics and if the government does not boycott it, it will send a very wrong message to the gas-affected people in Bhopal," said survivor and activist Hazra Bee who has been campaigning for better compensation and medical treatment for the victims.
The survivors of the gas tragedy blame two entities, their own government and Dow Chemicals for their suffering: the government for ignoring their pain and negotiating a low compensation, and Dow Chemicals because it bought Union Carbide and has said legal claims from the disaster have been resolved.
So far, pressure from survivors' groups pushed the Indian Olympic Association and the Federal Sports Ministry to write to the International Olympic Committee asking for Dow to be dropped as a sponsor.
The sports ministry also hinted at a possible boycott of the games.
The IOC has maintained that Dow was not responsible for the gas leak and the company would continue as an Olympic sponsor.
Dow Chemicals, who is sponsoring a 11 (m) million US dollar decorative wrap that will be installed around London's Olympic Stadium, had distanced itself from the responsibility for the gas disaster long before its association with the Olympics.
The company, says that the legal case was resolved in 1989, when Union Carbide settled with the Indian government for 470 (m) million US dollars.
The company says all responsibility for the factory now rests with the government of the state of Madhya Pradesh, of which Bhopal is the capital.
Both survivors and activists argue that in fact Dow's legal responsibilities are far from over.
"For Dow the Olympics are like the Ganga in which it will dip and wash away its crime," said Sarangi, referring to the dip devout Hindus take in the sacred Ganges river as a cleansing ritual.
In recent years the long dormant case against Dow has heated up.
In February 2011 India's Supreme Court issued notices to Dow Chemicals and Union Carbide Corp. saying it will begin hearings on a petition filed by the government asking for an additional payment of 1.7 (b) billion US dollars as compensation to those killed and injured.
They say that its purchase of Union Carbide also makes Dow responsible for lingering contamination and other issues.
Ignored by their own government, the victims hold on to the hope that by protesting Dow's Olympic sponsorship they will force the world to turn its eyes to their suffering.

<button
