This year we wanted the public, there is nothing there now. But the High Court laid a condition that \"this is not a children's park. Be cautious.\" There is a lot of toxic waste so we got it cleaned and burnt 40 metric tonnes of the waste at Pithampur. 350 metric tonnes of toxic waste, which is 25 years old, is still there. But there is nothing in it, not even smell. Various of graffiti on the boundary wall\u003cbr/\u003e25 years after the gas tragedy in Bhopal, people are still struggling to come to terms with what happened.\u003cbr/\u003eThe cleanup of the disused factory is dragging on, and the toxic waste is continuing to contaminate water supplies.\u003cbr/\u003eTime has stood still at the Union carbide factory in the central Indian city of Bhopal. \u003cbr/\u003e25 years after it spewed 40 tonnes of deadly methyl isocyanate (MIC) gas in the dead of the night on 2-3 December, 1984, the factory wears a deserted, run-down look. \u003cbr/\u003eWindowpanes have broken, the metal structures have rusted and an occasional stray dog takes shelter in the shadow of the plant. \u003cbr/\u003eThe disinfectant lining the roads and the freshly cleared vegetation are the only signs of the government's plans to throw open the factory to the public.\u003cbr/\u003eThose plans now lie shelved following a court ruling. \u003cbr/\u003eThe gas killed at least 10,000 people and affected some 550,000 others. \u003cbr/\u003eMany have died over the years from gas-related illnesses, like lung cancer, kidney failure and liver disease.\u003cbr/\u003eMore than 555,000 people who survived the initial disaster are thought to have suffered from after effects, though the exact number of victims has never been determined. \u003cbr/\u003eTara Sahu was three months pregnant with her fourth child when the gas seeped into her room. \u003cbr/\u003eCries of people outside woke her up and soon she was coughing with tears rolling down her eyes. \u003cbr/\u003e\"The gas filled the room and I and my youngest son came back into the room after running here and there. I woke up my husband. When he got up, he bolted the door from outside. We got scared, we started coughing, tears started running down our eyes. I grabbed my son and ran away.\"    \u003cbr/\u003eTara worked as a 'beedi' worker rolling tendu leaves into cigarettes, while her husband was a bus driver.\u003cbr/\u003eThe family managed to flee the city but they had inhaled a lot of gas.\u003cbr/\u003eThough they survived, she lost her unborn child. \u003cbr/\u003eThe family ran up huge medical bills in getting themselves treated and continue to suffer from minor illnesses.\u003cbr/\u003eThey never suspected that the factory in their neighbourhood stored such deadly chemicals, something which the management, workers and the authorities knew all along.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Union Carbide factory manufactured a pesticide named Sevin by using methyl isocyanate that was stored in huge tanks. \u003cbr/\u003eTota Ram Chouhan, who worked as an operator at the MIC plant, says that it was a tragedy waiting to happen, as safety norms were being overlooked at the factory.\u003cbr/\u003eChouhan joined the factory in 1974 and, following training and a stint in another plant, was transferred to the MIC plant in 1982.\u003cbr/\u003eWhen he joined, he was assured that the factory operated on advanced technology and was absolutely safe.\u003cbr/\u003eBut during the course of his employment, he realised that safety norms were being ignored because of budget constraints. \u003cbr/\u003eChouhan claims the workers' union made several complaints to the management and the authorities, but with no result.\u003cbr/\u003e\"A vital instrument that indicated contamination, a temperature indicator, was not working. There were many accidents here and we protested against the working conditions through our workers' union.\"    \u003cbr/\u003eUnion Carbide never named the gas that leaked from the factory and claimed sabotage by a disgruntled employee led to the leak.\u003cbr/\u003eA criminal case is pending in a Bhopal court that re-issued an arrest warrant against Warren Anderson, then CEO of Union Carbide, in July this year. \u003cbr/\u003eThe court also ordered India's government to press Washington for his extradition. \u003cbr/\u003eAnderson had been arrested in India just after the disaster but left the country and now resides in New York.\u003cbr/\u003eIn 1989, Union Carbide paid $470 million in compensation to the Indian government and said the authorities were responsible for the cleanup. \u003cbr/\u003eUnion Carbide is now owned by Midland, Michigan-based Dow Chemical Co.\u003cbr/\u003eBut activists insist it is the responsibility of the new owners, Dow chemicals, to clean up the factory site. \u003cbr/\u003eThey allege that the groundwater of the neighbouring colonies has been contaminated by the toxic waste on the factory premises. \u003cbr/\u003eThe International Campaign for Justice in Bhopal continues to draw people from around the world. \u003cbr/\u003eA group of artists from New York-based Artmaker Inc are painting a mural- 'Power to the People'- to commemorate 25 years of the tragedy. \u003cbr/\u003eJanet Braun-Reinitz, President, Artmakers Inc, says twenty five years was a long time for the people to suffer and their complaints should have been answered long ago. \u003cbr/\u003e\"There is no excuse for it, I mean there just isn't. Dow could afford to put in all new water pipes, dig wells, get rid of everything like that, if they wanted to and I'm sure the Indian government could do.\"\u003cbr/\u003eThe campaign notwithstanding, the state government insists there is no toxicity in the wastes inside the factory. \u003cbr/\u003eBabulal Gaur, Bhopal Gas Tragedy Relief and Rehabilitation Minister, says that 40 metric tonnes of wastes had been disposed off at a nearby facility, while 350 metric tonnes of waste still needed to be disposed off.  \u003cbr/\u003eBut he insists tests by government agencies have shown the wastes are not toxic.\u003cbr/\u003e\"There is nothing in it, not even smell.
