Wide shot of US soldier standing above large mural of two Afghans playing baseball painted on the wall of a house\u003cbr/\u003eThe field was dust, not grass; the players wore knee-length shirts, not uniforms; and there was no seventh-inning stretch.\u003cbr/\u003eBut Friday's baseball game in a remote area of Afghanistan was still recognizable as the most American of pastimes, even without the beer and hot dogs.\u003cbr/\u003eCheered on by their U.S. Army Special Forces coaches and with hit western music blaring from a loudspeaker, two teams of Afghan boys, ages 10 to 16, play every week before an ever-growing audience of curious\u003cbr/\u003eAfghan villagers.\u003cbr/\u003eThe two teams, the Afghan Club and Shaheen, or Eagles, were organized by the U.S. Army Civil Affairs division and played their first game a month ago. \u003cbr/\u003eThey compete every Friday on a converted soccer field in this southeastern Afghan province where U.S. troops are hunting Taliban and al-Qaida fugitives.\u003cbr/\u003eFar from the nearest sporting goods store, a few accommodations had to be made. The catcher wore a flak jacket instead of a catcher's vest. The bases are sandbags. And previously the bat was fashioned from a large tent peg.\u003cbr/\u003eNow, however, the league has three genuine aluminum bats, gloves for all the players and a number of balls. The equipment was donated by American churches and friends and relatives of soldiers stationed here.\u003cbr/\u003eBoys must be in school to compete in the 10-game season. Many of the young spectators already play soccer or cricket, a legacy of British influence. But all said they were eager to try a new sport.\u003cbr/\u003eThe league even has a sponsor of sorts, a local hardware store owner who donated the tea kettle that offers the only refreshment. Beer is forbidden in this Islamic culture. The kettle has been painted to look like a baseball, white with red stitches, and bears the store's name.\u003cbr/\u003eCoaches call out instructions to their teams, sometimes with a translator, although both coach and player are learning each other's language.\u003cbr/\u003eCpl. Peter Sarvis, of the 102nd Quartermaster, coaches the Afghan Club. He said the boys understood some of the basics, since they already knew cricket, which has similarities to baseball.\u003cbr/\u003eThe fine points of the game are lost on the spectators, who watched atop the mud-brick walls around the field or squatted in the dirt nearby. Police keep spectators away from the field and soldiers stand lookout from the\u003cbr/\u003erooftops of the village school.\u003cbr/\u003eThe soldiers hope to form a girls' league as more equipment becomes available.\u003cbr/\u003eWhen the game ended after six innings, the scoreboard, written in Pashto, showed Shaheen 6, Afghan Club 1.\u003cbr/\u003e\u003c/span\u003e\n\u003c/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv
