agreement over the long-disputed Rock of Gibraltar.\u003cbr/\u003eThe issue of sovereignty over the tiny British colony is not up for discussion, but the meeting will address the use of Gibraltar's airport, British pension payments to Spanish retirees, telecommunications and issues surrounding traffic at the Spanish border.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Rock of Gibraltar, a six-square-mile narrow peninsula located at the very southern tip of mainland Europe, has been an object of dispute between Spain and the United Kingdom ever since it was captured by a British naval force in 1704.\u003cbr/\u003eIt is now recognised as a British overseas territory. \u003cbr/\u003eBut the sovereignty of Gibraltar has long been an issue of contention in Anglo-Spanish relations. \u003cbr/\u003eSpain requests the return of sovereignty, which was given up by the country forever in 1713. \u003cbr/\u003eAny transfer of sovereignty has been consistently and totally rejected by almost all Gibraltarians.\u003cbr/\u003eGibraltarians said they were firmly opposed to British Prime Minister Tony Blair's proposal of co-sovereignty between the UK and Spain in a referendum held in 2002.\u003cbr/\u003eBut some things still need to be discussed and on September 18 the Spanish Foreign Minister,  the British Minister for Europe and Gibraltar's Chief Minister Peter Caruana are scheduled to meet.\u003cbr/\u003eIn recent months all three sides have sought greater cooperation on issues such as joint use of Gibraltar's airport, and disagreement over pensions for Spanish employees working on the 'Rock'.\u003cbr/\u003eGibraltar's Chief Minister Peter Caruana says a number of agreements need to be made.\u003cbr/\u003eHe adds it is up to the people of Gibraltar to make decisions on the Rock's future.\u003cbr/\u003eLocal citizen Douglas says he was born on the Rock and is definitely British.\u003cbr/\u003eWhile Peter, also a local, says he thinks it time Gibraltarians see the potential in being neighbours with Spain.\u003cbr/\u003eOne of the principle issues to be addressed in the 18 September meeting is the issue of the use of the airport on Gibraltar.\u003cbr/\u003eChief minister of Gibraltar Peter Caruana says Spain must rethink it's current ban on Spanish airlines using the Gibraltar airport.\u003cbr/\u003eAnd, constituting the only entrance to the Mediterranean Sea from the Atlantic Ocean, Gibraltar has been always been a valuable military base - regardless of its occupants.\u003cbr/\u003eThe peninsula is about 5km long and a kilometre wide, and was a key point in the anti-submarine campaigns in both World Wars.\u003cbr/\u003eThere are still a number of military defences scattered around the the peninsula.\u003cbr/\u003eWith not much room for development, Gibraltar went underground as the harbour was redesigned and an airfield built. \u003cbr/\u003eThere are still miles of tunnels and chambers dug out of the limestone and an underground city, with its own electricity supply, telephone exchanges, bakery and hospitals.\u003cbr/\u003eGail Francis, a tourist official on the Rock, says she thinks it is important to remember that there are many other things going on in Gibraltar other than politics.\u003cbr/\u003eDominique Searle, chief editor on the newspaper the Gibraltar Chronicle says it is about time the issues between Spain, the UK and Gibraltar were resolved.\u003cbr/\u003eOver in nearby Algeciras in Spain, the  local mayor Tomas Herrera says he thinks the people from Gibraltar are a unique mix of Spanish and British, but ultimately they are Gibraltarians.\u003cbr/\u003eBack on Gibraltar and patriotic feelings run high.  \u003cbr/\u003eBut Peter Caruana says he
