spill as laboratory tests heightened concerns about possible longer-term harm caused by toxic heavy metals in the slurry.\u003cbr/\u003eTechnicians from the Research Institute for Soil Science and Agricultural Chemistry of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences used motorised drilling machine to extract one metre deep probes of the soil lying beneath the red mud which now covers the area of Devecser, a town in western Hungary inundated on Monday by the sludge. \u003cbr/\u003eThe samples were then categorised and will be taken to Budapest for further analysis.\u003cbr/\u003eHowever the institute's director was already predicting far from positive results on Friday.\u003cbr/\u003e\"I think this is a very big problem because of the very high pH of the red mud,\" Attila Anton said. \"The consistency of the red mud totally stopped the respiratory activity of the soil and normal microbial life in the soil.\"\u003cbr/\u003eGovernment officials lowered their estimate of the size of Monday's catastrophic spill - but even those figures were mind-boggling. \u003cbr/\u003eThey said the reservoir break at an alumina plant dumped up to 700-thousand cubic meters (184 million gallons) of sludge onto three villages - not much less in a few hours than the 200 million gallons the blown-out BP oil well gushed into the Gulf of Mexico over several months beginning in April.\u003cbr/\u003eThe disaster's confirmed death toll rose from four to seven. \u003cbr/\u003eAn 81-year-old man died Friday from injuries sustained in the torrent and two bodies were found on the outskirts of Devecser. \u003cbr/\u003eThe unidentified victims were likely two of the three Kolontar residents still missing, rescue agency spokesman Tibor Dobson said.\u003cbr/\u003eDobson gave no further details, but the location of the bodies suggested they were swept over 3 kilometres (2 miles) by the torrent. \u003cbr/\u003eOne Kolontar resident was still missing on Friday\u003cbr/\u003eThe red sludge devastated creeks and rivers near the spill site and entered the mighty Danube river on Thursday, moving downstream toward Hungary's immediate neighbours, Croatia, Serbia and Romania. \u003cbr/\u003eConflicting information swirled about what exactly there was to fear from the tons of caustic waste that continued to coat the most seriously hit areas with ankle-deep ochre-coloured muck.\u003cbr/\u003eThe prestigious Hungarian Academy of Sciences reiterated Friday that while the red sludge remained hazardous due to its caustic alkalinity but its heavy metal concentrations were not considered dangerous for the environment. \u003cbr/\u003eHowever,  Greenpeace told reporters in Vienna on Friday that red sludge samples taken Tuesday, a day after the spill, contained \"surprisingly high\" levels of arsenic and mercury. \u003cbr/\u003eAnalysis of water in a canal near the spill also found arsenic levels 25 times the limit for drinking water. \u003cbr/\u003eThe results, based on analyses carried out in laboratories in Vienna and in the Hungarian capital, Budapest, also found 660 milligrams of chrome per kilogram.\u003cbr/\u003eVery roughly speaking, that translates into 50 tons of arsenic, 300 tons of chrome and 500 kilograms, or a half ton, of mercury set free by the spill, Greenpeace officials told reporters in Vienna on Thursday.\u003cbr/\u003eHungary's state secretary for the environment, Zoltan Illes, also admitted the henna-coloured sludge covering a 16-square-mile (41-square-kilometre) swathe of countryside has 'a high content of heavy metals,' some of which can cause cancer. \u003cbr/\u003eHe warned of possible environmental hazards, particularly to groundwater systems.\u003cbr/\u003eWith rain giving way to dry, warmer weather over the past two days, the caustic mud is increasingly turning to airborne dust, which can cause respiratory problems, Illes said.\u003cbr/\u003eGovernment emergency services officials on Friday urged residents near the toxic flood area to wear face masks.\u003cbr/\u003eHowever in some good news experts said  the Danube apparently absorbed the massive red sludge spill with little immediate damage on Friday. \u003cbr/\u003eMonitors were taking samples every few hours to measure damage from the spill but the sheer volume flowing in Europe's second largest river appeared to be blunting the red sludge's immediate impact.\u003cbr/\u003ePrime Minister Viktor Orban said the threat to the Danube had been eliminated, and the International Commission for the Protection of
