for the last time.\u003cbr/\u003eAn era is drawing to a close not only for Hong Kong but also for the Britannia - the vessel is due to be decommissioned shortly after the handover ceremonies.\u003cbr/\u003eBut in the run-up to next week's handover ceremony, it is to become the floating base for Prince Charles - the heir to the British throne - who.will formally hand the territory back to Chinese President Jiang Zemin.\u003cbr/\u003eAs the British Royal Yacht Britannia sails into Hong Kong for the last time, its slow but steady arrival marks the end of an era for Hong Kong.\u003cbr/\u003eThe vessel - escorted by Royal Navy ships and helicopters - is on hand to take Prince Charles and Governor Chris Patten away from Hong Kong at the end of the midnight handover celebrations on June 30.\u003cbr/\u003eCharles - the heir to the British throne - will formally hand the territory back to China's President, Jiang Zemin.\u003cbr/\u003ePrince Charles and the Governor are to set sail for the Philippines after the handover, and the yacht will be decommissioned as a royal vessel soon afterwards.\u003cbr/\u003eIn the meantime it will serve as a floating base for the Prince in Hong Kong.\u003cbr/\u003eThe ship has sailed more than a (m) million miles, serving as an official private residence of the Royal family when they are at sea.\u003cbr/\u003eHer 19 officers and 217 crew members- including a Royal Marine band- has allowed the vessel to offer comfort and entertainment to the royal guests often on board.\u003cbr/\u003eThe yacht docks in Hong Kong after completing a seven month journey which has taken her to the Mediterranean, the Arabian Gulf, the Indian Ocean and the Far East.\u003cbr/\u003eEven though she will be decommissioned, Britannia's exact future remains a mystery.\u003cbr/\u003eThe British Government has not yet decided what will happen to her, among the options a future role as a floating museum or an end to her days as scrap metal.\u003cbr/\u003eBut in the meantime the sailors on board run through their daily duties, ever aware of their time drawing near.\u003cbr/\u003eAnd as the preparations for the 1 July event builds up, Commodore Tony Morrow talks about the procedure that will take place when the Britannia pulls out of Hong Kong's harbour after the handover ceremonies.\u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE: (English)\u003cbr/\u003e\".My own people will be doing their job fully ready for the spectacle of that occasion and doing all that is required of them at that time to make sure the yacht seemlessly moves out of the harbour.
