Mather and George F Smoot won the 2006 Nobel Prize in physics on Tuesday for work that helped shed more light on the beginning of the universe and the origin of galaxies and stars.\u003cbr/\u003eThe scientists were awarded the prize for discovering the nature of \"blackbody radiation,\" cosmic background radiation believed to stem from the so-called Big Bang when the universe was created, the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences in Stockholm said.\u003cbr/\u003eTheir work was based on measurements done with the help of the NASA-launched Cosmic Background Explorer satellite in 1989. \u003cbr/\u003eThey were able to observe the universe in its early stages about 380,000 years after it was born. \u003cbr/\u003eRipples in the light they detected also helped demonstrate how galaxies came together over time.\u003cbr/\u003eBy confirming the predictions of the Big-Bang theory, which states that the universe was borne of a dense and incredibly hot state billions of years ago, with direct quantitative evidence, the scientists transformed the study of the early universe from a largely theoretical pursuit into a new era of direct observation and measurement.\u003cbr/\u003e\"The very detailed observations that the laureates have carried out from the COBE satellite have played a major role in the development of modern cosmology into a precise science,\" the academy said in its citation.\u003cbr/\u003eMather, 60, works at the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland, and Smoot, 61, works at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in Berkeley, California.\u003cbr/\u003eThe fact that their findings were cemented in 1989, and awarded the prize this year, was a change from previous awards for topics that were often discovered decades earlier.\u003cbr/\u003eReached at his home in Berkeley, Smoot told The Associated Press he was surprised to have received a wake-up call from the Nobel committee in the middle of the night.\u003cbr/\u003eMather said he was \"thrilled and amazed\" at receiving the prize.\u003cbr/\u003e\"I can't say I was completely surprised, because people have said we should be awarded, but this is just such a rare and special honour,\" Mather said in a live telephone interview with the Nobel committee.\u003cbr/\u003eHe said he and Smoot did not realise how important their work was at the time of their discovery.\u003cbr/\u003eAlfred Nobel, the wealthy Swedish industrialist and inventor of dynamite who endowed the prizes, left only vague guidelines for the selection committee.\u003cbr/\u003eIn his will, he said the prize should be given to those who \"shall have conferred the greatest benefit on mankind\" and \"shall have made the most important discovery or
