Pan from smoke to wide of Reventador volcano erupting\u003cbr/\u003eThe people of Ecuador live in the shadows of several volcanos which have shaped their lives. \u003cbr/\u003eThe Andean country is criss-crossed by mountain ranges with at least a dozen active volcanos, some close to heavily populated areas. \u003cbr/\u003eVolcanic activity has been recorded in Ecuador for hundreds of years. \u003cbr/\u003eThe active Rucu-Pichincha volcano towers over Quito, Ecuador's capital, a city of a million and a half people.\u003cbr/\u003eIn 1999 the volcano spewed great showers of ash over Quito. \u003cbr/\u003eThe same phenomenon occurred several months ago with another volcano, Reventador, 95 kilometers from Quito. \u003cbr/\u003eThe wind carried the dust and ashes from the Amazon region to the West and the ash fallout covered an area of 20 square kilometres, including Quito and its neighbouring valleys.  \u003cbr/\u003eSecurity and cleaning committees had to be organized. Authorities from both municipal and the central government began to remove the one million tons of ash deposited over the city.\u003cbr/\u003eCotopaxi is Ecuador's most well-known volcano and one of its most active. Lava accompanying explosive eruptions of Cotopaxi have frequently devastated adjacent valleys. The most violent eruptions in recorded history were in 1744, 1768, and 1877. \u003cbr/\u003eVolcanic material descended on all sides of Cotopaxi in 1877 and huge quantities of lava traveled more than 100 km into the Pacific Ocean and western Amazon basin. \u003cbr/\u003eThe last significant eruption on Cotopaxi took place in 1904. \u003cbr/\u003eThe recently monitored Cayambe is the last volcano adjacent to large populated areas which has shown significant activity. Cayambe is located in the Eastern Cordillera (range) of the Ecuadorean Andes.   \u003cbr/\u003eCayambe is a volcano which has not erupted since historical records were first taken - but it is showing signs of recent activity,  threatening large populated areas and important agricultural centers to the north of Ecuador.\u003cbr/\u003eThis natural phenomenon has generated new opportunities for tourism in the South American country. \u003cbr/\u003eA good example is Ba�os, a small village located in the central Andean region. There are organized tours that take tourists to observation points to watch the nearly daily eruptions of Tungurahua, a volcano that throws vapor, gases and ash periodically. \u003cbr/\u003eHistorical eruptions have originated from the summit crater and have included strong explosions and sometimes lava flows, lahars (the deposit produced by such a landslide) and pyroclastic flows that reached populated areas at the volcano's base. The volcano's complex historical record includes sudden and violent eruptions. \u003cbr/\u003eThe main question remains unanswered by scientists as to whether these volcanos are a threat or spectacle. \u003cbr/\u003eEcuador's National Military Geographical Institute recently announced that the Tungurahua volcano had increased its activity and was spewing gas and ash.\u003cbr/\u003eThe ash from the volcano meanwhile was falling on the agricultural zone surrounding the mountain and damaging many crops in nearby towns such as Ambato, Pelileo and Banos. Farmers complained that the emissions were not only hurting the crops, but that cattle could not eat the thus were ill.\u003cbr/\u003eTungurahua is an active strato volcano also known as the \"The Black Giant.\" It has a 600 feet (183 metre) wide crater. \u003cbr/\u003eTungurahua has had at least seventeen eruptions in historical times, its most recent occurring in 1944 when it erupted explosively from its central crater. \u003cbr/\u003eTungurahua is the largest volcano in Ecuador.\u003cbr/\u003e\u003c/span\u003e\n\u003c/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv class='action-container flex
