Wide of students carrying instruments walking out of class\u003cbr/\u003eIn the golden age of mariachi, music lovers would crowd theatres and restaurants to hear mournful ballads about love and heartbreak.\u003cbr/\u003eBut today practitioners of Mexico's energetic two-step rhythm are often demoted to soliciting for an audience at traffic lights, and on the streets.\u003cbr/\u003eMariachi music may remain one of Mexico's top cultural exports but its fortunes have fallen in its homeland.  \u003cbr/\u003eFew decent venues to play in and bands and singers that lack polish have all left mariachi in the doldrums. \u003cbr/\u003eBut a new school in Mexico City is seeking to revive mariachi music and restore its dignity.\u003cbr/\u003eCalled the Mariachi School Ollin Yoliztli, meaning life and movement in indigenous Nahautl, the school teaches folk bands how to play professionally while grooming a new generation of songwriters and composers.\u003cbr/\u003e\"I thing there's a lot of enthusiasm and a lot of faith that this programme, this project is going to give an opportunity to a lot of these musicians that have, honestly, felt marginalised here in Mexico,\" said Leticia Soto, the school's director.\u003cbr/\u003eSoto's school has hired some of the best musicians in the business, including former members of the group Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlan, which continues to tour worldwide, often performing with classical orchestras and symphonies.\u003cbr/\u003eThe goal is to formalise a musical tradition that has largely been passed down the generations, with no formal instruction. \u003cbr/\u003eThe 102 members of the first class of Ollin Yoliztli are another string to the bow of those trying to 'turn it all around' for mariachi.\u003cbr/\u003eThey range from a 14-year-old junior high school student to a 68-year-old retired nurse. The group started formal classes last week and are scheduled to graduate in three years with a technical degree.\u003cbr/\u003eMany like harp player Marco Antonio Beristain have rarely been in a classroom.\u003cbr/\u003e\"This is the first time that I have entered in a school. I've always had private harp lessons, but even that hasn't happened that often because they never had enough time,\" said the mariachi school freshman.\u003cbr/\u003eThe first mariachi bands, in the 18th century, played only stringed instruments and dressed in white cotton fabric, huarache sandals and wide-brimmed straw hats, the clothing of Mexican farm workers of the time. \u003cbr/\u003eTrumpets were added in the early 20th century, and mariachi bands began wearing the more elegant charro, or cowboy, outfits familiar to modern audiences. \u003cbr/\u003eBy the second half of the century, mariachi music had become a widely popular symbol of Mexican culture, played by radio stations and featured in charro films during the country's Golden Age of cinema, from 1935 to 1959. \u003cbr/\u003eBy then, the music had become popular in Central and South America and the United States. \u003cbr/\u003eThe 1980s saw the genre fade as radio buzzed with more commercially successful music such as norteno and banda, which includes lyrics about drug trafficking, or pop music.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Ollin Yoliztli school not only hopes to provide a whole new generation of polished mariachi musicians but also to expand the genre's reach.\u003cbr/\u003eOne of the striking thing about the first year group of students is the inclusion of a dozen women in a music style that has been traditionally male dominated.\u003cbr/\u003eAbigail Espinoza is one of them, the young accomplished singer is now looking to become an all-round mariachi performer and is quickly getting to grips with the vihuela, a type of guitar synonymous with mariachi.\u003cbr/\u003eMariachi retains deep roots in Mexican culture, with many people knowing by heart longtime favourites. \u003cbr/\u003eAlmost every big event in Mexico, from weddings and funerals to Mother's Day celebrations, includes a mariachi band, and abroad, the music offers a tie for many Mexicans to their native land. \u003cbr/\u003eWhile most of that music is amateurish at best the handful of top mariachi stars left can nonetheless still fill auditoriums.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Ollin Yoliztli aims to build a
