Tilt down from palm trees on beach to cyclists\u003cbr/\u003eA return to simplicity is what Californian artists are all about now. \u003cbr/\u003eBrightly coloured palm trees and larger than life portraits, in addition to concerns about environmental matters, mark a new trend in the artsy world of Venice beach, California, long considered an ideal location for inspiration.\u003cbr/\u003eWhen California artist Peter Alexander sent his colourful palm trees to a Chicago dealer ten years ago, he was told off for being so 'southern Californian', and not metropolitan enough.\u003cbr/\u003eBack then, he might not have guessed how events and climate change would have drawn the artist community, ten years later, to appreciate his simple and suggestive images. \u003cbr/\u003eVenice beach, Santa Monica, Gallery 169 hosted Alexander's exhibition, 'Velvets and Palms', in July. \u003cbr/\u003eHis works are just another example of Alexander exploring qualities of light, iridescence, and luminosity, since the 1960's. \u003cbr/\u003eHe pushes artificial light by printing on synthetic silks or vinyl surfaces and is famous for palm trees and city nightscapes.\u003cbr/\u003eMany of his one-of-a-kind pieces are on exhibit currently in Beverly Hills, Hong Kong, Amsterdam and India. \u003cbr/\u003eExhibit visitor Gabrielle Gottlieb, from Pacific Palisades, says Alexander's work has brightened her day and helped her forget all other appointments. \u003cbr/\u003eGallery 169 owner Frank Langen says the California weather has much to do with the flourishing and spreading of creative arts and new trends. \u003cbr/\u003eHe says the clich�s of California work well; from waves, to the ocean, and palms. \u003cbr/\u003e\"California is a place that is obviously one of those places that the whole world looks to, and is familiar with. And one of the reasons is that living in the environment of California is also going to effect what you produce as it does the art,\" Langen says. \u003cbr/\u003eTourists flock daily from around the world to the wide expansive coastline of California, and for years artists have done the same. \u003cbr/\u003eThe state, known as a haven for creative minds, abounds in arts. \u003cbr/\u003eIt is a place where artists take risks, invent and re-invent themselves and where collectors are everywhere, says Barbara Isenberg, author of \"State of the Arts: Conversations with California Artists\".\u003cbr/\u003eIsenberg has been writing and lecturing about arts issues and personalities for three decades.\u003cbr/\u003e\"In California, whether they were born here or whether they came here, they could be mavericks,\" Isenberg adds. \u003cbr/\u003eCalifornia art is prevalent in all shapes and sizes with one iconic theme being tropical palm trees that make beautiful custom landscapes. \u003cbr/\u003eSome California artists are called light and space artists because they maximise beautiful California light and the sense of wide-open western space with inspiration coming from surrounding palm trees, sunsets, the ocean, and the sky. \u003cbr/\u003eIsenberg says artists come here because this is the land of opportunity, with weather and freedom. \u003cbr/\u003eFor California's world renowned veteran painter, Lee Waisler, California art has meant using texture and colour to express an inner emotional and spiritual freedom.\u003cbr/\u003eWaisler layers his canvases with pigments, sand, gesso, glass, shells, and other organic elements.\u003cbr/\u003eHe also does mixed media works in colour on black paper. \u003cbr/\u003eHis latest works, created at his Venice Beach, California studio just a stones throw from the ocean, are huge portraits, including famous people such as performer Jamie Fox and politicians.\u003cbr/\u003eHis art is in the permanent collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, the Brooklyn Museum of Art, The Jewish Museum, New York, the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, England; the Smithsonian Institution, Washington DC; and the National Gallery of Modern Art, in New Delhi, India. \u003cbr/\u003eWaisler says that California artists are unique because of all the environmental inspiration they get. \u003cbr/\u003eHe says over time, California art has changed dramatically from when people were painting the outdoors in the 20s and 30s, light effects in the 40s, and then abstractions in the 50s,
