Various of statue being raised\u003cbr/\u003eIt is a battle of art versus industry, environmentalists versus chemical production. \u003cbr/\u003eIsraeli environmentalists and Bedouin tribesmen gathered in the Negev Desert Hill to raise a 400 ton, 17 meter statue - hoping it will guard locals against the growing pollution in the area.\u003cbr/\u003eIt is called 'the guardian of Negev'.\u003cbr/\u003eIt is meant to guard the Bedouin tribes-people living in makeshift villages, against the pollutants emitted from the neighbouring Israeli Ramat Hovav Industrial Park.\u003cbr/\u003eArtist and environmentalist Emilio Mogliner is the creator of the sculpture - but he has paid a heavy price for his beliefs.\u003cbr/\u003eHis right arm is paralysed from an attempted assassination in his studio after he tried to stop smugglers from stealing beach sand for illegal cement production.\u003cbr/\u003eMogliner says he hopes his latest effort is to make Israeli's aware of environmental destruction.\u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE (English)\u003cbr/\u003e\"This big sculpture , you know, comes out from the earth and said ' I am here. scale pools meant to sanitise wastes and eliminate smells. \u003cbr/\u003eThe conflict with Ramat Hovav is part of an ongoing struggle faced by the Bedouin to maintain their traditional nomadic life style.\u003cbr/\u003eThe natural habitat for the Bedouins is the open desert, herds and a life in tents - but the industrial and urban development in Negev have gradually forced the Bedouin to move into makeshift villages.\u003cbr/\u003eAs the cranes and bulldozers lifted the massive sculpture - there was some doubt if 'the guardian of the Negev' would ever get off the ground... the ropes
