Out of those, up till now 17 have expired and 15 have been discharged from the hospital after receiving treatment.\"\u003cbr/\u003e12. Mid of patients in bed\u003cbr/\u003eHospitals in Pakistan were on Saturday treating at least 62 people thought to have consumed a cough syrup that has allegedly killed 33 people over the past three days. \u003cbr/\u003ePakistani authorities are investigating the allegations, a government official said on Saturday.\u003cbr/\u003eIt is the second time in recent months that medicine is suspected of causing multiple deaths.\u003cbr/\u003eThe deaths from the cough syrup occurred in the eastern city of Gujranwala and nearby villages, said a local official.\u003cbr/\u003eAnother 54 people thought to have consumed the syrup were also being treated at city hospitals.\u003cbr/\u003eOfficials believe the victims drank the syrup to get intoxicated, the official added.\u003cbr/\u003eTests show the victims' stomachs contained dextromethorphan, a synthetic morphine derivative used in cough syrup that can have mind-altering effects if consumed in large quantities.\u003cbr/\u003eInvestigators are trying to determine if the victims drank too much syrup, or whether there was a problem with the medicine itself, he said.\u003cbr/\u003eTwenty-three people died in the nearby city of Lahore in November after drinking bad cough syrup sold under the brand name Tyno.\u003cbr/\u003eThey were also described at the time as people who consumed the drug to get high.\u003cbr/\u003eThe official said the cough syrup involved in the incidents in and around Gujranwala was not sold under a single brand.\u003cbr/\u003eHe said some people in the city make cough syrup to sell specifically to drug addicts, and officials are trying to arrest them.\u003cbr/\u003eOfficials temporarily closed one Lahore-based pharmaceutical company whose cough syrup was found in the possession of some affected in
