The announcement was made by Chinese President Jiang Zemin during his visit to the United States. Whether China is prepared to put this new openness into practise is unclear. While religious freedom is allegedly guaranteed and official churches have been established, finding a place for religious worship in China is almost impossible. This difficulty has led to the growth of so-called underground churches.  One of them is called No. 28 Under the Bridge Church in Qingdao. The small non-denominational Christian church, housed in a rented building, has had its application for legal church status rejected. And on Saturday (1/11), its leaders were summoned to a\u003cbr/\u003emeeting with the local district administrator, who served them with an eviction notice. The church-goers gather regularly to take part in religious services. One of their intentions is that they will be allowed to practise their faith as long as they want, wherever they want.
