Various NASA animation fly-through of Mars polar ice cap\u003cbr/\u003eEnglish/Nat\u003cbr/\u003eNASA scientists have created the first three-dimensional animations of the Martian north pole - based on new data from the orbiting Mars Global Surveyor spacecraft.\u003cbr/\u003eThe data gives them the chance to analyse key aspects of the geology of the Red Planet and provides a level of detail that is not even available for some locations on Earth.\u003cbr/\u003eA new detailed portrait of the Martian polar ice cap is the latest fruit of the mission of the Mars Global Surveyor spacecraft.\u003cbr/\u003eFor two years now, the NASA probe has been orbiting the Red Planet, capturing images of its surface.\u003cbr/\u003eThe latest images beamed back have astounded scientists.\u003cbr/\u003eAnalysing the first close-up views of the top of Mars, they can agree on one thing: it looks like nothing they've seen before.\u003cbr/\u003eThe ice cap on the Martian north pole measures 750 miles (12-hundred kilometres) and is one point eight miles (two point 88 kilometres) thick.\u003cbr/\u003eIt has giant sand dunes and small volcanoes right next to the ice.\u003cbr/\u003e\"We see longitudinal sand dunes that form an apron of debris in a very large region, a region, what should I say, a third the size of the U-S in ah, adjacent to the polar cap. We also see little volcanoes; volcanoes much smaller than the big Hawaiian volcanoes we all know and love here in the United States, that appear to have formed in, in very low energy type environments adjacent to that polar cap. perhaps a little disappointed.\u003cbr/\u003eWhile the ice cap covers an area 50 percent greater than the U-S state of Texas, researchers had expected it to be bigger.\u003cbr/\u003eEven with Mars' very cold climate, it is only half the size of the ice cap covering Greenland and only four percent of Antarctica's combined ice sheets.\u003cbr/\u003eThe amount of water trapped in the ice cap is not sufficient to have carved the deep gullies that scar the surface of the planet, and is about 10 times less than the minimum volume that researchers believe would have been necessary to fill an ancient ocean.\u003cbr/\u003eIt rests in a deep basin at the top of the planet that might have been created by an asteroid impact similar to craters on the Moon. \u003cbr/\u003eNASA plans to launch its next unmanned satellite to study the Martian climate on Thursday. \u003cbr/\u003eIn January, the space agency plans to launch another spacecraft to study the south pole of
