the postponement of the exercises, at a spot in the Kuwaiti desert just 20 kilometres from the border with Iraq.\u003cbr/\u003eHowever, US commanders insisted that their tanks could fight in such conditions and that the weather would not deter possible US-led military action against Iraq.\u003cbr/\u003eModern US tanks, such as the M1A1 Abrams main battle tank used by the US Marines, are equipped with thermal imaging sights, which allow them to attack in darkness and low visibility by detecting the heat from enemy targets.\u003cbr/\u003eMeanwhile, in Kuwait City, the two main American schools on Monday announced they had decided to close for about six weeks because of growing tensions in the Gulf region.\u003cbr/\u003eThe American School of Kuwait and the American International School said they would shut their doors from 10 February to 22 March. \u003cbr/\u003eA personnel administrator for the American International School said school officials believed the dates chosen for the closure could correspond to the dates of an actual war.\u003cbr/\u003eThe schools had expected to close for parts of that period for upcoming national holidays. \u003cbr/\u003eThere was no specific threat against the schools, students or teachers, officials said.\u003cbr/\u003eAbout 200 American children attend the American School of Kuwait and about 70 attend the American International School. \u003cbr/\u003eAbout two thousand children of Kuwaiti and other nationalities who attend the two schools would be affected by the closures.\u003cbr/\u003eThe decision came two weeks after suspected Muslim extremists shot and killed a businessman who was contracted to the US military in Kuwait.\u003cbr/\u003eThe US State Department has strongly urged American private citizens to
