We no longer work with them since 2008,\" he added, saying \"the European market is much more stable.\"\u003cbr/\u003eThe Minister of Agriculture of Moldova set to tone down the conflict over allegiances, saying all markets are important for Moldovan products.\u003cbr/\u003e\"How can I say i'm not interested in a certain market when a product might sell in that very market? What we have to do as producers is to diversify our markets, not to become dependant on only one, no matter how convenient that would be,\" Vasile Bumacov said.\u003cbr/\u003eBut the tug-of-war for allegiances still evokes memories about post-World War II conferences and the division of the continent in zones of influence. \u003cbr/\u003eAnd it raises the stakes for the Vilnius summit where EU leaders like German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Francois Hollande will be on hand to witness the likely commitments of Georgia and Moldova to the European Union. \u003cbr/\u003eBrandishing bans and embargoes could also work against Russia in the long run. \u003cbr/\u003eJust ask Georgia, which has also had to grapple with Russian wine bans, trade threats and even a war in his brief history since independence. \u003cbr/\u003e\"We showed that we can survive without the Russian market,\" Georgian Foreign Minister Maia Panjikidze said in a recent interview with The Associated Press. \u003cbr/\u003eTogether with Moldova, Georgia too is set to ceremoniously lock that Eastern Partnership embrace at the two-day Vilnius summit.\u003cbr/\u003e\"In the last seven years, we did not have this access and the Georgian economy did not collapse,\" Panjikidze said.\u003cbr/\u003eSome agree Moldova's shift towards Europe should pay dividends. \u003cbr/\u003e\"The impact of the trade agreement on Moldovan GDP will be worth one year of growth,\" said Georg Zachmann, Research Fellow at Bruegel think tank.  \u003cbr/\u003e\"(The growth will be) in the order of five to seven percent GDP on top of the normal growth rate just through the trade agreement with the European Union,\" he added.\u003cbr/\u003eBut EU accession isn't universally popular in Moldova - 15 thousand people marched in the capital Chisinau on Saturday to oppose joining.\u003cbr/\u003eAnd Moscow isn't giving up authority over its former backyard without a fight.\u003cbr/\u003eWhile Moldova and Georgia plan to go ahead with the agreement, Ukraine stunned many of its own people last week by pulling out of a landmark deal with the EU.\u003cbr/\u003eAfter years of preparations, President Viktor Yanukovych's government announced abruptly last week that it was putting the agreement on hold and that Ukraine would focus on improving ties with its giant neighbour Russia.\u003cbr/\u003eThe decision threw everybody off guard, since Yanukovych promised just two months ago that the political association and free trade deal would \"absolutely\" be signed. \u003cbr/\u003eOpinion polls show that Ukrainians prefer the EU to Russia and the anger over snubbing the deal has spilled into the streets.\u003cbr/\u003eYanukovych sought to defend his move Monday, saying that Ukraine will still strive to become part of the European community, but that he had to pause for now to protect jobs, salaries and pensions.\u003cbr/\u003eRussia has imposed painful restrictions on some Ukrainian exports in recent months and warned that further sanctions will follow, were Kiev to sign the deal.\u003cbr/\u003eA key sticking point in the EU's negations with Ukraine has been the jailing of Yanukovych's top foe, the Orange Revolution heroine and former prime minister Yulia Tymoshenko.\u003cbr/\u003eThe West considers her imprisonment politically motivated and Brussels has warned that it will not sign the deal unless Tymoshenko is freed.\u003cbr/\u003eLanaken, Belgium - 5 November 2013\u003cbr/\u003e1.
