Close up dew on leaf\u003cbr/\u003eThe environment is facing ever increasing pressure from the growth in world population.\u003cbr/\u003eAs a result deforestation is growing globally which in turn affects complex ecosystems. \u003cbr/\u003eIn central Mozambique ways are being found to work with local communities to find alternatives to continued deforestation.  \u003cbr/\u003eMount Gorongosa in central Mozambique is renowned for its moist evergreen rainforest, home to a rich diversity of plant and animal species.\u003cbr/\u003eMany of these species are endemic to this mountain.\u003cbr/\u003eAccording to forest ecologist, Dr Tom Muller, the 28 kilometre wide mountain south of the Zambezi river is the largest continuous area of  the Afromontane forest in southern Africa. \u003cbr/\u003eHowever, due to the encroaching human population, the forest is rapidly disappearing to make way for subsistence agriculture. These forest trees take several hundred years to reach maturity. \u003cbr/\u003eScientists at the adjoining Gorongosa National Park predict that at the current rate of deforestation, the forest ecosystem will become degraded beyond the point of recovery within five years.\u003cbr/\u003eAs well as being a place of natural beauty and supplying oxygen to the planet, Mount Gorongosa's forest also serves the vital function of a perennial water supply.\u003cbr/\u003eMontane meadows and forests absorb rainfall during the wet season for slow release during the dry season.\u003cbr/\u003eThe year-long water supply benefits not only people living around the park, but also the wildlife of the adjoining Gorongosa National Park, as Hydrologist Richard Beilfuss explains.\u003cbr/\u003eScientists like Beilfuss are concerned that climate change will compound the problem of drier conditions in the area.\u003cbr/\u003eLocal farmers responsible for the rapid deforestation use the 'slash and burn' method of preparing land for agriculture, but burning vegetation often results in dangerous wildfires, and soil exposure to the sun leads to rapid evaporation and low soil fertility. \u003cbr/\u003eAs a result, the land can only be used for two to three years before the farmer has to move elsewhere.\u003cbr/\u003eRaymondo Mirione is a local farmer and he says he alternates farming between two different plots.\u003cbr/\u003eIt's not all bad news however. A campaign to conserve Mount Gorongosa is underway, led by neighbouring Gorongosa National Park and the Carr Foundation, in collaboration with local communities.\u003cbr/\u003eNhancuco village leader, Amadeu Simabare Furai, is actively involved in the conservation project. He says the campaign has many benefits for the local area.\u003cbr/\u003eApproximately fifteen species of indigenous saplings are being raised in the five nurseries run by the Gorongosa National Park Mountain Conservation Project. \u003cbr/\u003eThese saplings are being planted in critical areas such as river banks, and steep slopes facing erosion due to deforestation.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Mountain Conservation Project works by liaising with mountain dwellers and teaching the importance of forest conservation.\u003cbr/\u003eCastro Dolis Moneis is an Eco-tourism guide. He explains how a former agricultural plot is now growing seedlings.\u003cbr/\u003eThe mountain conservation project is working with farmers to find alternatives to traditional slash and burn agriculture.\u003cbr/\u003eFor example, organic farming, whereby instead of burning old plant remains, these are mulched into the soil, becoming a rich fertiliser.\u003cbr/\u003eReforestation Programme Manager, Regina Cruz, says this means the same plot can be used for much longer than with the conventional slash and burn method.\u003cbr/\u003eProperly managed organic farming land can be used productively, indefinitely.  \u003cbr/\u003eThe Mount Gorongosa conservation project is working to increase the value of these forests, both locally, and for an anticipated increase in
