Wide of conference \u003cbr/\u003eRepresentatives from forty eight countries around the world have gathered in Paris for the annual meeting of ICCAT, the International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tuna.  \u003cbr/\u003eThe representatives, whose talks will go on until November 27th, are preparing to set fishing quotas for the Atlantic bluefin, whose tender red meat is popular in sushi in Japan.  \u003cbr/\u003eBut the ICCAT meeting takes place one day after France, Spain and other Mediterranean nations forced the European Union to retreat on Thursday from an ambitious plan to save the threatened and prized bluefin tuna. \u003cbr/\u003eAfter drawn-out negotiations, the 27-nation EU abandoned a plan to seek cutbacks in fishing quotas based only on scientific advice and said on Thursday it will now also consider the interests of tuna fishermen. \u003cbr/\u003eGreenpeace activists turned up in their \"tuna-mobile\" to the conference taking place at the Marriott Hotel. They briefly unfurled a banner that read \"Bluefin Tuna - Eight Days To Live\" before French police pulled it down and ripped it up.  \u003cbr/\u003eOne of the Greenpeace activists, Francois Chartier, voiced his disappointment with the decision on tuna taken by the  European Union on Thursday. \u003cbr/\u003e\"Ten days ago, the European Commission had already proposed a quota of six thousand tons and now we are talking about a reduction of two thousand tons to eleven thousand tons,\" he said. \u003cbr/\u003eBluefin tuna stocks in the eastern Atlantic and the Mediterranean have dropped 60 percent from 1997 to 2007, and the current Mediterranean fishing quota is 13,500 metric tons a year.\u003cbr/\u003eSome conservationists want quotas slashed at the international meeting, while others want fishing suspended entirely, saying that illegal fishing is rampant in the Mediterranean. The conservation group WWF says the species is \"on the brink of extinction.\"\u003cbr/\u003ePierre Amilhat, the EU Head of Delegation, said simply: \"Too many boats fishing, too few fish.\"\u003cbr/\u003e\"It's pretty simple to say but very, very difficult to achieve.
