So whilst at the same time I am saying that there are terrible things going on Israel, well any idiot knows that, it's not something that we can pretend is really great and there aren't people blowing themselves up, that is happening, but at the same time I still live there. SOUNDBITE (English) Robbie Gringas:\u003cbr/\u003e\"It's actually been a show that for the last two years I've been trying not to do, trying to avoid touching this subject and I eventually found that I couldn't not do it. It's more this thing that one goes through one's mind in Israel - you listen to the news, there's been a bomb, you're terrified, you hear it's no one that you know and then you are happy. And this relief, thought that someone else got blown up instead of someone that you know I couldn't live with any more and I needed to keep feeling it.\"\u003cbr/\u003e10. Performance - 'The Situation Comedy'\u003cbr/\u003e'The Situation Comedy,' now on at the Edinburgh Fringe at the weekend, a one-man show the title of which is a pun on the Israeli word, 'hamatzav,' meaning the situation, the euphemism to  encompass the impact on Israeli society of the intifada. \u003cbr/\u003eRobbie Gringas plays a man who is 35 days late for a job interview with the Jewish Agency, the Israeli organisation that helps Diaspora Jews emigrate to Israel. \u003cbr/\u003eHe has to explain why he's late. \u003cbr/\u003eAs he does, he recounts everything that has happened to him since his daughter set out on a bus journey that would become the target of a 'pigua,' a terrorist attack. \u003cbr/\u003eBut he also tries to imagine himself into the mind of the bomber, Mohammed the Baker, whose house and livelihood have been destroyed by the Israeli army by mistake and who is recruited as a bomber by his next-door neighbour. \u003cbr/\u003eThe play is threaded together using a series of darkly ironic, real life incidents that have happened during the latest bout of blood letting between Israelis and Palestinians.\u003cbr/\u003eFor example, a while ago, Gringas read of a man who had trained as a medic in the Israeli army. \u003cbr/\u003eHearing a bomb go off he ran to help, and gave the kiss of life to a man whose legs had been blown off.  Looking round for other wounded people, he realised there weren't any. The man he'd given the kiss of life to was the bomber himself.\u003cbr/\u003eThe morally ambiguity struck him. \u003cbr/\u003eCloser to home, a bus is blown up near Safed, in northern Israel. Everyone on his kibbutz waited hoping and praying that the victims wasn't one of their loved ones. When it became clear it was a neighbours daughter who was blown to pieces, Gringrass was overwhelmed with relief - that it was someone elses kids. \u003cbr/\u003eThen he felt profoundly disturbed. Then he he sat down and to write what became 'The Situation Comedy.'\u003cbr/\u003eGringas, 38, grew up Manchester, England, and in 1991 he established a successful Jewish theatre company called the Besht Tellers before emigrating to Israel in 1996 to live on Kibbutz Tuval in northern Israel - an area where Jews and Arabs live side-by-side.\u003cbr/\u003eGringas had already attempted to create a play dealing with \"the situation\" but it didn't work, A British Council-sponsored visit by director Peta Lily led to workshops on what she calls the \"dark clown\", the way in which comedy and tragedy interconnect. This was the theatrical key he'd been looking for. \u003cbr/\u003e'The Situation Comedy' has played widely in Israel, before Arabs and Jews,  the USA and Australia, but there has been a stony silence from the Jewish community in Britain, which regards it as being soft on suicide bombers for examining the part Israel has played in motivating them.\u003cbr/\u003eHe says: \"The idea of living in Israel and Zionism itself is no longer such a cut and dry, black and white beautiful picture.
