A Requiem of War,\" which will have its world premiere on October 24.\u003cbr/\u003eLeave it to Nick Cave, the master Australian singer-songwriter, to turn darkness, doom and heartbreak into poignant lyrics that mean much more than the sum of the words.\u003cbr/\u003e\"If he writes about this, I believe it. I believe every word of it because it is true,\" said composer Nicholas Lens, who said Cave was already thinking along with the singers when he started writing. \u003cbr/\u003eFor Cave it was leaving the well-trodden path of rock and roll for opera.\u003cbr/\u003e\"If you have the pretension to talk about such a heavy subject, I think everything should be right. Everything should be very clear and and crystal clear even,\" said Lens.\u003cbr/\u003eLens himself was born in Ypres, the very heart of Flanders Fields, a region in western Belgium pock-marked with bomb craters and remnants of the Great War. \u003cbr/\u003eThe four-year conflict drew young men from all continents, including Cave's Australia, to fight and die in the battles opposing one camp led by Britain, Russia and France against Germany and the Austro-Hungarian army.\u003cbr/\u003eIt claimed an estimated 14 million lives, including five million civilians and nine million soldiers, sailors and airmen from 28 countries. At least seven million troops were left permanently disabled. Nations lay in ruin.\u003cbr/\u003eIt was challenging to find the right choreography for the production, said choreographer Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui. \u003cbr/\u003eShell shock in the war was basically today's post-traumatic stress disorder, so don't expect to see much traditional prettiness on stage.\u003cbr/\u003eAnd here too, Cave's jarring texts had their impact to inspire.\u003cbr/\u003e\"He set the tone.
