It's a hard game to play. Usually you start the race at full, 100 percent battery, and the goal is to end the race at zero if you can. That way you're using the maximum amount of power available to you,\" says Halm. \u003cbr/\u003e\"And so our strategists look at weather, the route, everything else that could possibly be considered, and try to put out an optimal strategy, an optimal speed, that we can go to use up as much power as possible to go as fast as possible to potentially win the race,\" he continues.\u003cbr/\u003eThe University of Michigan will be up against the Petroleum Institute (PI) in Abu Dhabi, a university and research centre.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Institute is competing for the first time and has partnered with the Tokai University in Japan, a world leader in solar cars.\u003cbr/\u003ePI has spent more than two million US dollars on its vehicle which can cover 300 kilometres (186 miles) on a charge of just two to three hours. \u003cbr/\u003eTeam Leader Alatqa Al Hanai believes solar energy is the future for country's like the UAE.\u003cbr/\u003e\"So now the question is, why aren't we using that energy? Why aren't we using that sunlight? And why not?\" he says.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Yes, we have oil reserves, yes, we have enough energy to sustain ourselves. But if you look at the definition of sustainability that's the ability to take care of yourselves, the current generation, and make sure there's enough for the future generation. And that's where solar energy comes in. That's sustainability. This is a sustainable, renewable energy system,\" Al Hanai continues.\u003cbr/\u003eThe teams face their solar panels towards the sun - a last minute effort to charge the batteries.\u003cbr/\u003eDan Eberle, Event Director of the Abu Dhabi Solar Challenge, explains the ethos behind the competition.\u003cbr/\u003e\"We want the engineers of the future to have an experience where they have to maximise the amount of energy that they use, maximise the efficiency of the vehicles that they design because that is our future energy-wise,\" he says.\u003cbr/\u003eThe challenge is sponsored by ADNOC, Abu Dhabi's National Oil Company, and Masdar.\u003cbr/\u003e\"The significance of being here I think is not missed on our teams, that an oil company sponsored this event. Why? Because they know that energy efficiency is the key to have the resources that we have right now last as long as we can make them last until we find whatever the next thing is beyond the petroleum that we have become reliant on,\" says Eberle.\u003cbr/\u003eThe start flag is raised and the cars are off.\u003cbr/\u003eToday they're covering a distance of 419 kilometres (260 miles), passing the iconic Liwa sand dunes of the Western Region.\u003cbr/\u003eMany are maintaining speeds of up to 120 kilometres per hour on these roads.\u003cbr/\u003eQuantam is the first across the finish line with a time of around 4 hours and 45 minutes.\u003cbr/\u003eThe team celebrates the victory.\u003cbr/\u003e\"All out as fast as we can go without breaking the speed limit. That was our strategy. Take the turns as fast as we can.
