Close up on label\u003cbr/\u003eA US trade official on Tuesday accused China of failing to take product piracy seriously, rejecting Beijing's claim that it is stamping out a multibillion-dollar trade in counterfeit goods.\u003cbr/\u003eWilliam Lash, a deputy US commerce secretary, showed reporters fake New Balance sneakers and a fake North Face jacket that he bought in China, and ripped up a fake Kate Spade brand handbag with his hands.\u003cbr/\u003eLash said that piracy has worsened and spread.\u003cbr/\u003eChina denies such accusations, citing rising numbers of criminal cases brought against pirates. The government announced last week that it has arrested 419 people in a crackdown on trademark theft and has enacted tougher penalties include jail time for violators.\u003cbr/\u003eChinese officials also criticise the scale of damage reported by US companies, saying they are overstating lost sales.\u003cbr/\u003eAccording to Lash, Chinese officials said that total fines for piracy in 2003 reached 30 (m) million US dollars.\u003cbr/\u003eBut Lash said that was a tiny fraction of the 60 (b) billion US dollars in revenue lost by US, European and Japanese firms in potential sales that year because of piracy in China.\u003cbr/\u003eChina doesn't need piracy to compete, Lash said, pointing to its soaring trade surplus.\u003cbr/\u003eThe US textile and clothing industry asked Washington on Wednesday to re-impose quotas on 14 categories of clothing to protect American manufacturers from a flood of Chinese imports. Earlier this week, the US government agreed to investigate whether to impose quotas.\u003cbr/\u003eChina's Ministry of Commerce vehemently protested against any efforts by the United States, and also the European Union, to stem surging imports of Chinese textiles, warning such moves could harm world trade.\u003cbr/\u003eLast month a spokesman for China's textile makers,Cao Xinyu, vice chairman of the official China Chamber of Commerce for Import and Export of Textiles, defended surging exports as part of free trade, appealing to the United States and Europe to avoid restricting
