Galapagos was Brazil's Rio de Janeiro province. \u003cbr/\u003eAhead of the 200th anniversary of his birth, Darwin's great great grandson is re-tracing his famous ancestor's steps. \u003cbr/\u003eIn 1831, naturalist Charles Darwin set out on a voyage to the Pacific aboard the HMS Beagle. \u003cbr/\u003eDarwin arrived in Brazil in 1832 and began exploring and documenting the enormous biodiversity he found in the rainforests of Rio de Janeiro province. \u003cbr/\u003eIn his diary he mentions parasite plants like the lianas and bromeliads that hang from trees. \u003cbr/\u003eAn avid beetle collector in England, Darwin collected hundreds of specimens of insects, reptiles and mammals all along the Beagle voyage. \u003cbr/\u003eHe was also impressed by the variety of Brazilian spiders and found 37 different types. \u003cbr/\u003eTree frogs, hummingbirds, butterflies, wasps, ants and fireflies, are among the animals mentioned in his diary. \u003cbr/\u003eAfter observing the differences between the mockingbirds on the Galapagos Islands, and those elsewhere in Latin America, the scientist began to develop his theories. \u003cbr/\u003eIt set Darwin on a course that challenged the prevailing idea that each species was distinct and unchanged or stable since the moment it was created.  \u003cbr/\u003eHis work would change the way most people think about nature and the origins of humans. \u003cbr/\u003eNow 200 years after his birth a descendant of Darwin is retracing his steps in Brazil. \u003cbr/\u003eBrazil's 'Darwin Roads expedition' is the first of many to be held around the world ahead of the 200th anniversary of his birth on February 12, 1809. \u003cbr/\u003eRandal Keynes, a 60 year old linguist who is Darwin's great great grandson, is taking part in the tour of locations visited by the naturalist. \u003cbr/\u003eKeynes wrote 'Annie's Box', a book about Darwin's family life centered on the death of 10 year old daughter Anne. \u003cbr/\u003eThe expedition visited 12 municipalities in Rio de Janeiro state, inaugurating signs along the path of Darwin's voyage here. \u003cbr/\u003eTwo buses carrying high school teachers and students, university professors, photographers and journalists visited 12 municipalities in which signs were placed.  \u003cbr/\u003eThe expedition was organised by the department of science of Rio's federal university. \u003cbr/\u003eCharles Darwin's impressions were recorded in a diary used by the organisers to retrace his trip. \u003cbr/\u003eAt one of the first stops the visitors were treated to a performance of Capoeira. \u003cbr/\u003eThe martial art of Capoeira is thought to have been practised by African slaves in Brazil as early as the fifteenth century. \u003cbr/\u003eIt is a combination of dance and martial art style fighting and people taking part in the art are said to \"play\" it. \u003cbr/\u003eOn many occasions Darwin writes about the cruelties of slavery which was only abolished in Brazil in 1889. \u003cbr/\u003eKeynes says that Darwin's experience of witnessing slavery allowed him to develop theories about empathy and concerns about the welfare of others, which Keynes says remained central to his thinking throughout his life. \u003cbr/\u003eIt was in Rio de Janeiro that Darwin encountered the great biodiversity of the tropical forest. \u003cbr/\u003eDarwin spent 92 days altogether in Rio de Janeiro province, whilst his colleagues abroad HMS Beagle performed new surveys to determine the geographical coordinates off the Brazilian coast. \u003cbr/\u003eIn his autobiography Darwin would recall how \"the glories of the vegetation of the Tropics, rise before my mind...more vividly than anything else\". \u003cbr/\u003eIldeu de Castro Moreira, from the state's department of Science and Technology, says that what Darwin observed here would impact his later theories. \u003cbr/\u003eLocal biology teacher Mauro Santos says that even those who don't believe in his theory of evolution are impressed that the great scientist visited here. \u003cbr/\u003eHowever much of the forest that Darwin explored in Rio no longer exists. \u003cbr/\u003eIt is estimated that only 8% of the original Atlantic Rainforest remains. \u003cbr/\u003eThe Atlantic Rainforest covers 17 states on the Brazilian coast, from Ceara State in the North-Eastern Region, to Santa Catarina State in the South Region of the country.\u003cbr/\u003eElsewhere in Brazil the Amazon rainforest is being deforested more than three times as fast as last year, Brazilian officials said in September ,acknowledging a sharp reversal after three years of declines in the deforestation rate. \u003cbr/\u003eAmazon destruction jumped 228 percent in August when compared to the same month a year ago, according to a report from Brazil's National Institute for Space Research, which uses satellite imagery to track illegal logging.\u003cbr/\u003eAbout 300 square miles (760 square kilometers) of the
