Wide actors clapping\u003cbr/\u003eThe image that comes to mind of most film festivals is of the rich and famous walking down a red carpet, the flashes of hundreds of photographers capturing a moment of glory of a new movie premiere.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Saharan International Film Festival (FISAHARA) could not be further from that glitzy image. \u003cbr/\u003eThe event, now in its fifth edition is held in a dusty, wind swept refugee camp in a far flung corner of Algeria.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Dajla camp is home to approximately 50,000 refugees from the Western Sahara, a territory in southern Morocco. \u003cbr/\u003eAfter Spain withdrew from the territory as a colonial power, Morocco took over Western Sahara in 1975, sparking a long conflict as fighting broke out between Morocco, Mauritania and the pro-Independence Polisario Front.\u003cbr/\u003eThe United Nations brokered a cease-fire in 1991, but Morocco never delivered on its promise to hold a self-determination referendum for the territory's people, and Polisario guerrillas have threatened to resume fighting if the dispute is not resolved. \u003cbr/\u003eThe ceasefire left around 500,000 people in a state of limbo, carving out some sort of existence in one of the most inhospitable places on earth.\u003cbr/\u003eNow an annual film festival is a chance to bring some publicity to the plight of the Western Saharan people living amongst the dunes in the \u003cbr/\u003eDajla refugee camp. \u003cbr/\u003eOver five days around fifteen films are shown on a giant outdoor screen. \u003cbr/\u003eThe residents say they appreciate the films, but are even happier with their high profile guests. \u003cbr/\u003ePepe Taboada was a Spanish soldier in the Western Sahara during Spain's retreat from the territory in the 1970's. \u003cbr/\u003eSince then he has fought to bring attention to the plight of the Saharan people and their struggle for self-determination.\u003cbr/\u003eHe is angry that after more than thirty years a solution has not been found to end the conflict. \u003cbr/\u003eThe UN facilitated several rounds of peace talks in the last year. \u003cbr/\u003eTaboada says the film festival brings the issue to the media's attention. \u003cbr/\u003eKhadija Hamdi, the Culture Minister of the disputed Western Sahara Territory says \" Cinema is  the voice and the eyes of the Saharawi people.\"\u003cbr/\u003eShe says the film festival helps tell the outside world about their situation. \u003cbr/\u003eAs in Cannes, Berlin or Venice; film festivals need movie stars and the Sahara International Film Festival (FISAHARA) is no exception. \u003cbr/\u003eDressed in a traditional headscarf, Oscar winning actor Javier Bardem's appearance caused a stir. \u003cbr/\u003eThis was his first visit to the camp and he says he is shocked and indignant at the conditions the people here have to endure.\u003cbr/\u003eAnother of the festival's special guests was French musician Manu Chao. \u003cbr/\u003eHe says he wants French people to care about the plight of the Saharawi people. \u003cbr/\u003eAt the award's ceremony which brought an end to the festival, director Ken Loach won the first prize for his movie 'Free World' and received a real-life camel as a prize. \u003cbr/\u003eSecond place went to a Spanish documentary \"The Sahara is not for sale\", and its director Luis Arellano picking up his camel trophy from the The head of Western Sahara's government-in-exile Mohamed Abdelaziz.\u003cbr/\u003eThe conflict has gained in importance to Western nations as they try to pressure North African countries to contain the growing violence in the region linked to al-Qaida and radical Islamists.  \u003cbr/\u003eThe United Nations now spends $46 million a year on more than 500 peacekeeping personnel, mostly military observers and local civilians. \u003cbr/\u003eThe film festival took place from April 17 and April 20,
