Car drives away\u003cbr/\u003eEnglish/Nat\u003cbr/\u003eNobel peace laureate Jose Ramos Horta, who fled East Timor just three days before Indonesia invaded in 1975, arrived in Jakarta on Saturday.\u003cbr/\u003eHe immediately went to meet participants in talks sponsored by the Roman Catholic church, which are aimed at bringing peace to the former Portuguese colony.\u003cbr/\u003eAmong those present was Jose Alexandre \"Xanana\" Gusmao, a pro-independence leader who is serving a 20-year prison sentence under house arrest in Jakarta.\u003cbr/\u003eGusmao and Horta had not seen each other since Horta was exiled. \u003cbr/\u003eNobel laureate and East Timorese resistance leader Jose Ramos Horta returned to Indonesia on Saturday.\u003cbr/\u003eHe immediately went to meet pro-independence campaigner, Jose Alexandre \"Xanana\" Gusmao, who is being held under house arrest by the Indonesian authorities. \u003cbr/\u003eThe pair had not met since Horta went into exile in 1975.\u003cbr/\u003eHorta was given a visa by Indonesian authorities so he could join Jakarta peace talks between East Timor's warring factions, ahead of an August ballot in which the territory will choose between independence or greater autonomy within Indonesia.\u003cbr/\u003eAlso attending the talks was another leading figure in the struggle for democracy in the former Portuguese colony, Jose Luis Gutterres.\u003cbr/\u003eSoon after his arrival, Horta was driven to a nearby hotel where the East Timor peace talks are taking place.\u003cbr/\u003eHorta thanked the Indonesian authorities for allowing him to enter the country and said that he was happy to abide by their conditions during his stay.\u003cbr/\u003eHe has been a thorn in Jakarta's side for years but particularly since 1996, when he won the Nobel Peace Prize jointly with Bishop Carlos Belo, East Timor's spiritual leader.\u003cbr/\u003eHorta said he hoped to visit East Timor soon.\u003cbr/\u003eIndonesia has said it would consider allowing him to go there as long as he does no political campaigning.\u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE: (English)\u003cbr/\u003e\"If the Foreign Minister says you can go but no political campaign.
