The veteran Socialist leader was France's longest serving head of state this century  when he stepped down last May after 14 years in power.He died early...\u003c/span\u003e\n\u003cspan class='full-description hide'\u003eEnglish/Nat\u003cbr/\u003eFormer French President Francois Mitterrand has died at the age of 79. \u003cbr/\u003eThe veteran Socialist leader was France's longest serving head of state this century  when he stepped down last May after 14 years in power.\u003cbr/\u003eHe died early today (Monday) after a long battle against prostate cancer.\u003cbr/\u003eFrancois Mitterrand made one of his last major appearances on the world stage during  the V-E Day Commemorations in May.\u003cbr/\u003eBut the strain of his fight against prostate cancer was clearly visible and the same  month he stepped down as the French president.\u003cbr/\u003eAs part of the V-E Day Commemorations, he also visited Queen Elizabeth the Second  and Prince Philip in London.\u003cbr/\u003eAnd, despite his illness, he flew to Berlin where he met German Chancellor Helmut  Kohl - all in the same day.\u003cbr/\u003eHowever, he sparked both praise and sharp criticism for saying Hitler's soldiers were  \"courageous\" albeit \"for a bad cause\".\u003cbr/\u003eThe socialist built his international reputation on an unrelenting drive to build European  unity, hand in hand with Germany's Kohl.\u003cbr/\u003eSpeaking in May, the former President of the European Community praised Mitterrand's  shake up of France - and, especially, the French economy.\u003cbr/\u003e\"It seems to me that for France the main legacy is to have today most modern society,  more modern economy and a more peaceful political life.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION: Jacques Delors, Former EC (European Community) President\u003cbr/\u003eMitterrand became French President in 1981 after defeating Valery Giscard d'Estaing  with the motto 'La Force Tranquille' - the quiet force.\u003cbr/\u003eHe was the first leftist President in 23 years and caused unease amongst France's  NATO allies when he brought four communist ministers into his government.\u003cbr/\u003eMitterrand forged together the modern-day French Socialist Party in 1971 and a year  later, engineered an alliance with the Communist Party.\u003cbr/\u003eHis political career spanned 50-years and he served as a minister under a wide range of  Presidents and in 1956 was made Justice Minister under Guy Mollet.\u003cbr/\u003eIn December 1994, he continued to display his commitment to European unity when he  met the then Italian Prime Minister, Silvio Berlusconi, who was also struggling with  political troubles.\u003cbr/\u003eBoth former leaders faced strong accusations of political corruption and widespread  public disenchantment - both of them lost their positions the following year.\u003cbr/\u003eMitterrand is considered the country's most influential modern leader after his arch rival  Charles de Gaulle.\u003cbr/\u003eMitterrand ruled France for the longest period since Napoleon last century.\u003cbr/\u003eFrancois Mitterrand finally died of prostate cancer, aged 79.\u003cbr/\u003eParis, France, 8 May 1995\u003cbr/\u003e1.
