People tend to cheer for the underdog and I don't know if people were cheering for me much when I was on the show, but against a massively powerful super-computer I'd like to think the viewers are for me,\" says Jeopardy! champion Ken Jennings.  \u003cbr/\u003eJennings won a record 74 consecutive \"Jeopardy!\" games in 2004-05.\u003cbr/\u003eHis co-player Rutter has won a record of nearly 3.3 million US dollars in prize money from ``Jeopardy!'\u003cbr/\u003eIn this practice round Watson has pulled in 4,400 US dollars, compared with 3,400 US dollars for Jennings and 1,200 US dollars for Rutter.\u003cbr/\u003eWatson is powered by 10 racks of IBM servers running the Linux operating system. \u003cbr/\u003eIt's not connected to the Internet but has digested encyclopedias, dictionaries, books, news, movie scripts and more.\u003cbr/\u003eThe system is the result of four years of work by IBM researchers around the globe, and although it was designed to compete on 'Jeopardy!' the technology has applications well beyond the game, according to David Ferrucci, Principal Investigator of Watson DeepQA technology, IBM Research.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Beyond Jeopardy it is about applications, it is about applications in health care, in tech support and publishing and legal. Any place where you want to get more precision and more depth, deeper analytics and understanding all that natural language content,\" he says. \u003cbr/\u003eHe says the technology could help doctors sift through massive amounts of information to draw conclusions for patient care, and could aid professionals in a wide array of other fields.\u003cbr/\u003eWatson, named for IBM founder Thomas J. Watson, is reminiscent of IBM's famous Deep Blue computer, which defeated chess champion Garry Kasparov in 1997. \u003cbr/\u003eBut while chess is well-defined and mathematical, \"Jeopardy!\" presents a more open-ended challenge involving troves of information and complexities of human language that would confound a normal computer.\u003cbr/\u003eThe massive computer is not behind its podium between Jennings and Rutter; instead it's represented by an IBM Smart Planet icon on an LCD (liquid crystal display ) screen.\u003cbr/\u003eThe practice round was played on a stage at an IBM research centre in Yorktown Heights, 38 miles (61 kilometres) north of Manhattan and across the country from the game show's home in Culver City, California. \u003cbr/\u003eThe winner of the televised match will be awarded 1 million US dollars.\u003cbr/\u003eSecond place gets 300,000 US dollars, third place 200,000 US dollars.\u003cbr/\u003eIBM, which has headquarters in Armonk has announced that it would give its winnings to charity while Jennings and Rutter say they would give away half theirs.\u003cbr/\u003eJennings says he can't guarantee a victory, but he's confident who he would bet
