With 15 electoral votes at stake, Democrats were hoping to gain an...\u003c/span\u003e\n\u003cspan class='full-description hide'\u003eEconomic disappointments are hurting the US Democratic party's chances to cement their hold on the divided state of North Carolina in this year's presidential race. \u003cbr/\u003eWith 15 electoral votes at stake, Democrats were hoping to gain an advantage by hosting their national convention in Charlotte.\u003cbr/\u003eAbout an hour north of Charlotte, the American Legion fair in Hickory was in full swing on Saturday.\u003cbr/\u003eAs the summer season wraps up, families were enjoying the rides, eating fair food and watching the tractor pulling competition.\u003cbr/\u003eWhile some fair-goers were plainly not interested in this year's elections, others were more cynical about the Democrats' decision to showcase their party in this southern state.\u003cbr/\u003eRoger Jones has been in tractor pull competitions for nearly a decade and, like his neighbours, he's not convinced that the Democrats have the answers to the region's economic issues.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Trying to win North Carolina, that is the reason they are down here,\" Jones told the Associated Press.\u003cbr/\u003eFair attendance is down on previous years: organisers say the poor economy and high unemployment rate has cut into many families' discretionary spending.\u003cbr/\u003eThe economy also is hurting Democratic chances to retain the state that President Barack Obama won in an upset victory 2008 by the narrowest of margins.\u003cbr/\u003eIt was the first time the Democrats had held the state since Jimmy Carter had won it in 1976.\u003cbr/\u003eSix thousand delegates and tens of thousands of others are converging on Charlotte for the Democratic National Convention, which officially kicks off on Tuesday.\u003cbr/\u003eUrban voters in cities such as Charlotte or Chapel Hill can be expected to turn out again for Obama.\u003cbr/\u003eBut many registered Democrats in smaller towns such as Greenville and Goldsboro felt the national party left them behind years ago.\u003cbr/\u003eWhen Democratic party leaders picked the city, they hoped to highlight an economic rebound and expand their presence in the south.\u003cbr/\u003eBut on the economic front, the state has a stubbornly high unemployment rate of 9.6 percent - one of the highest in the country - and the Charlotte metro rate is even higher at 10 percent.\u003cbr/\u003eThe high unemployment is hurting businesses and job seekers alike.\u003cbr/\u003eThere are, however, glimmers of hope.\u003cbr/\u003eGeneral Microcircuits' CEO Dave Dalton is hoping he is in the right place at the right time to expand his company.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Many, many customers, not just domestic but also international companies, are moving to Charlotte, setting up distribution channels, engineering firms so we are finding the majority of our growth are those companies moving into this region,\" he said.\u003cbr/\u003eRepublican political strategist Carter Wrenn says fixing the poor economy, rather than location of the convention, will affect how North Carolinians vote.\u003cbr/\u003e\"I got no idea why they picked Charlotte and I really don't think it matters,\" he said.  \u003cbr/\u003eEven for Democrats, the pick of Charlotte as a host city has been a source of consternation.\u003cbr/\u003eGay rights advocates and union groups are expected to protest the convention.\u003cbr/\u003eNorth Carolina voters easily passed a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage in May and many view the state as hostile to organised labour.\u003cbr/\u003eDemocrats hope once the convention begins and the party starts delivering its message to voters, all other problems will fade into the background.\u003cbr/\u003eCheering from the convention floor will be Congressman GK Butterfield, the sitting member for North Carolina's first district who is banking on a win for both himself and the incumbent president.\u003cbr/\u003e\"There are nine or 10 other swing states that are in play. North Carolina is very competitive, I acknowledge that, but we have a plan and we are executing the plan, and we don't want to peak too soon,\" he said.\u003cbr/\u003ePolls show Obama and Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney are neck and neck in the Tar Heel state (the state's nickname), where Democrats still have a comfortable edge in voter registration.\u003cbr/\u003eThe local TV airwaves have lit up with advertisements from both campaigns and so-called super PACs (political action committees) in North Carolina, where at least 56 (m) million US dollars worth of commercials have run so far. \u003cbr/\u003eBoth sides are also investing heavily in voter-outreach and volunteer efforts.\u003cbr/\u003eAnd yet increasing number of independent voters in North Carolina - this year there are 1.6 million (m) on the voter rolls, an increase of 300-thousand in four years - add to the uncertainty over the outcome.\u003cbr/\u003eWilson, North Carolina - 28 August 2012\u003cbr/\u003e1.
