Adda talking
27. Wide of jockeys walking with horses
Nine simple tests have been developed by researchers in France to determine the temperament of young horses.
The study by the National Institute for Agricultural Research (INRA), near Tours, south west of Paris, demonstrated that the temperament of a horse can be predicted reliably from the age of eight months.
Over the past decades, interest in leisure horse riding has sky rocketed in France.
Today there are more than one million amateur riders in France, and, according to statistics from the French Federation of horseback riding, 88% of these riders are below the age of 15, and 76% are girls.
The temperament of a horse is an essential factor for its appropriate use, be it leisure riding, sports competitions or racing.
Horses for leisure riding, for example, must be calm and steady so that they do not express any exaggerated reactions of fear which could lead to accidents.
Until now, no objective tests were available to discover the temperament of a horse, nor to select a horse based on his personality.
"Centre Bayard" is a horse riding centre in Paris for both children and adults.
Instructor Isabelle Matula says teachers there have had no easy way of detecting the temperament of a horse other than through use.
When new horses arrive at the centre, instructors just ride them and try to guess their temperaments using their instinct and empirical experience of horses.
In response to demands from professionals in the equine world, a scientific study was carried out over the past six years, at the National Institute for Agricultural Research (INRA), near Tours, south west of Paris.
Developed with the support of the National Stud Farms under the supervision of researcher Lea Lansade, this study has demonstrated that the temperament of a horse can be predicted reliably as from the age of eight months.
By studying more than 400 horses since 2001, Lansade has managed to identify nine simple tests which can objectively characterise the temperament of horses.
Between 2001 and 2007, hundreds of horses were studied at the INRA centre in order to develop tests.
During this period, more than 30 tests were developed to measure different aspects of temperament such as fear, social motivation ie : the acceptance of being alone or not, reactions to humans, the general level of activity or the sensitivity of horses.
After three years of research, nine tests were retained because of their ease of application, their reliability and their repeatability.
For example, the test of the white sheet is used to determine the level of fear and curiosity of a horse.
The horse is placed at one end of the sheet and some food is left at the other end.
Lansade says researchers then observe the reactions of the horse in front of the sheet: some panic and never cross the sheet, others take a certain amount of time before risking to walk on it but some horses are fearless and do it very easily.
Another test is the test involves an umbrella.
The horse stays alone in its stall while an umbrella is put through a hole in the wall and opened very quickly.
Again this test aims at checking the horses' level of fear.
Lansade says that although the tests may seem very simple, they are actually very rigorous and based on standardised scientific principles which can not by copied by anyone or in any environment.
The most important thing is that the tests are useful for those professionals who need to assess a young horse they see for the first time, and do it quickly in 20 or 25 minutes at most, she explains
According to INRA, this study has made it possible to design the first model in the world for equine temperament, with proven long-term stability.
This means that simple tests performed as from the age of eight months can predict the suitability of horses for different uses in adulthood.
As well as being able to predict the temperament of horses, the aim of the study was also to determine which temperament is best suited to different uses.
For Lansade, the study is useful for both leisure and sports riding.
The new study has also raised interest in the world of racing such as the Longchamp race tracks, where buyers, trainers and jockeys are looking for horses with specific temperaments - horses that will win.
For horse trainer Tony Clout, the study is interesting.
He thinks it can influence the way buyers choose their horses at purchase.
Rider Pascal Adda is a bit more sceptical about the tests. He says they cannot be used to set up general patterns of behaviour, but he agrees they could be very useful for buyers who are looking for fearless or aggressive horses.
National Stud Farms plan to make the test available to horseback riding centres in France and around the world, while INRA is now planning to follow up on this study.
The other seven tests used at INRA are :
Touch the animal with a fine filament around its wither, to see how much the muscles quiver, to test the horse's sensitivity. A broad variability in responses may be observed: some hypersensitive horses always quiver, while others never present any reaction. Conduct of these tests proved to precisely predict the aptitude of the horse to be mounted, and notably its sensitivity to the rider's natural aids.
Subject the horse to a "passive human" test: the animal's behaviour is observed in the presence of an immobile person at the door of its stall for 90 seconds, to test its reactions/friendliness towards humans.
Subject the horse to the "active human" test: a person moves towards the horse to put on a halter; in this case, the observer takes account of the time necessary to touch the shoulder, touch the head and put on the halter, assessing the horse's immobility and other behaviours such as trotting, biting or sniffing.
Put two horses together, then remove one for 80 seconds and check the other horse's reaction, to test the horse's sociability
Touch the horse's hind quarters to see how much they contract.
Measure the horse's reaction when put in an unknown stable.
Assess the general level of activity of the horse throughout the tests.
