Tight shot, hands, pan to doctor\u003cbr/\u003eEnglish/Nat\u003cbr/\u003eRat researchers in Philadelphia have discovered a process that may help paralysis victims regain movement in their limbs.\u003cbr/\u003eDoctors and computer experts have found a way to record rodent brain signals onto electrodes, enabling the rats to control a robotic arm without any actual muscle movement. \u003cbr/\u003eHe might not look much, but this little fellow would have the Pied Piper running for cover.\u003cbr/\u003eThis is no ordinary rat. \u003cbr/\u003eIn fact it's a bionic \"guinea pig\" being used by scientists to help paraplegics. \u003cbr/\u003eResearchers at M-C-P Hahnemann University in Philadelphia developed a process that could some day restore movement to paralysed human limbs. \u003cbr/\u003eScientists have taught lab rats to move a robotic arm to receive a reward, in this case water, without moving a muscle. \u003cbr/\u003eIn a sense they \"willed it to happen.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE: (English) \u003cbr/\u003e\"You can think of this as a wire tap. There is a process going on inside the brain which says, 'move my arm'. And we have electrodes tapping into that information and taking it out electronically and moving the robot arm directly, using that wire tap information.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION: Dr. John Chapin, Professor of Neurobiology and Anatomy at MCP Hahnemann University\u003cbr/\u003eWith implanted electrodes, researchers then recorded the simultaneous activity of dozens of neurons in the areas of the rats' brains that control muscle movement. \u003cbr/\u003eOnce the data was recorded, researchers switched control of the reward from the lever to the implanted electrodes. \u003cbr/\u003eThe rats continued to move the robotic arm to receive a reward, but they were doing so solely through brain activity, without moving a muscle.\u003cbr/\u003eThe implications of this experiment for humans with spinal cord injury could be enormous.\u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE: (English) \u003cbr/\u003e\"The sorts of paralysis syndromes that this could be useful for would be spinal cord injury. That's where you have in effect an injury that prevents the brain from communicating with the spinal cord. And of course it's the spinal cord that controls the arms and the legs.
