He grew up in Umvezo, he ate simple food like \"mnqushu\" (a dried corn and bean dish), he ate \"amasi\" (soured cow's milk) with \"umphogoqo\" (a type of polenta). of national celebrations for the former South African President's 90th birthday later this month.\u003cbr/\u003eMandela's youngest daughter Zindzi organised the feast, which included the spaghetti casserole Winnie Madikizela-Mandela used to bring her then-husband in jail; the soured milk known as amasi and other dishes from Mandela's native south eastern region of South Africa.\u003cbr/\u003eThe book's author, Pretoria-based anthropologist and chef Anna Trapido called the book a \"gastro-political biography\" to Mandela's life, using food as a metaphor to chronicle Mandela's struggle during the apartheid years.  \u003cbr/\u003e\"When one reads Madiba's (Mandela's) prison letters, which was the starting point for the book, it's how often he uses food metaphors to, you know, often when he's talking about love or passion or missing people, in fact what he's doing is describing meals or parties that they've had, that he's remembering,\" Trapido said at the launch. \u003cbr/\u003eTrapido read Mandela's prison letters and other documents in the archives of the Nelson Mandela Foundation, set up after he stepped down as South Africa's first black president after one five-year term in 1999. \u003cbr/\u003eShe interviewed Mandela and others including his children, his wives, friends, and even his prison guards, one of whom attended the launch with his wife, who used to bake fruitcakes for Mandela and other prisoners.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Mandela was a person who liked food,\" Christo Brand said. \"I think through this book, \"Hunger for Freedom,\" it will also bring people together because now people will go through the book, they will read about the curry of Maluchiba, they'll prepare the curry of the one of Dalar Omar's wife, Farida, and they'll maybe try to bake my wife's fruitcake.\"\u003cbr/\u003eOne of the past century's most admired political figures, Mandela was released from prison in 1990 and was elected as South Africa's first black
