There are also natural predators who attack the (penguin) population. Therefore, not only the natural predators but also the growing population have  impacted their habitat and now they have no territory to build their nests and incubate their eggs.\"\u003cbr/\u003e12. Various of penguins at the zoo \u003cbr/\u003eConservationists warned that the Humboldt penguin might become extinct if the governments from the rugged Pacific coasts of Peru and Chile don't control the growing population and predatory fishery.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Humboldt penguin is listed as \"vulnerable to extinction\" and figures in the red list of the World Conservation Union (IUCN). \u003cbr/\u003eThe uncontrolled commercial fishing and guano harvesting (excrements of sea-fowl used as fertiliser)  have made the penguin population decline significantly in 30 years. \u003cbr/\u003eConservationists said the Humboldt penguin is more sensible towards human disturbance than other penguin species, an aspect that needs to be considered whenever planning an intervention in the penguin's reserves.\u003cbr/\u003eHuachipa Zoo biologist Lizzett Bermúdez says the growing population and the indiscriminate activities of fishermen leave the birds with little territory to build their nests and incubate eggs.\u003cbr/\u003eHumboldt penguins had lived undisturbed in their habitat for thousands of years.\u003cbr/\u003eThere are a few as 10,000 birds in the wild today.
