protestors prevented work going ahead by blocking roads leading into the area.\u003cbr/\u003eAn early winter's morning calm in the English countryside shattered by the arrival of a digger at the site of the Newbury bypass.\u003cbr/\u003eProtesters had prevented work from starting on Tuesday but today (Wednesday) the contractors seemed more determined to make a start.\u003cbr/\u003eOne by one the activists were dragged away from the site of the proposed road through woodland near the southern town of Newbury.\u003cbr/\u003eProtestors clutched hold of trees destined for the axe but it appeared only a matter of time before they would be forced to withdraw.\u003cbr/\u003eAnti-roads activists say the campaign to halt the Newbury bypass is a crucial battle.\u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE:
