Migratory birds flying over the wetlands\u003cbr/\u003eHundreds of thousands of migratory birds are making their way to the wetlands of Indian Kashmir from Central Asia, China and Eastern Europe.\u003cbr/\u003eBut this year the extreme cold in the region means food is scarce and wildlife wardens are having to take to the water to feed the visitors.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Hokersar wetland reserve, one of the Kashmir Valley's major bird sanctuaries, is the winter home for a variety of migratory birds including geese, egrets, mallards, ducks, teals and cormorants. \u003cbr/\u003eCruising over the wetlands they feed on water chestnuts, small fish and wild grass - usually found in plentiful supply.\u003cbr/\u003eThis season however, the Kashmir Valley itself has witnessed heavy snowfall and an intense cold wave with temperatures plummeting well below zero (Celsius) which has frozen the water over some areas of the wetlands.\u003cbr/\u003eThe ice is now making it difficult for the birds to feed.\u003cbr/\u003eAbdul Rouf Zargar is a wildlife warden at Hokersar.\u003cbr/\u003eHe says they have made arrangements for the birds to be fed until they can find their own food in the wilderness.\u003cbr/\u003e\"We are inducing the artificial mode of feeding for these migratory birds in the form of paddy grains.  And when the temperature rises up, these migratory birds are coming back to harbour in our water bodies till the migration period is over.\"\u003cbr/\u003eEvery morning a team of wildlife wardens set out with sacks of paddy (unmilled rice), considered an ideal diet for the birds, which should help save them from starvation during the harsh winter days. \u003cbr/\u003ePaddy is loaded into boats and scattered across the water where the winged visitors gather to feed.\u003cbr/\u003eThe wardens say a lot of preparation goes into maintaining the water levels in the reserve including de-weeding and creating boat ways so that the annual visitors have a comfortable stay. \u003cbr/\u003eThe wardens have also formed squads to control the poaching of birds.\u003cbr/\u003eSuitable climatic conditions and availability of food in the region make Hokersar a favourite destination for the migratory bird species.\u003cbr/\u003eNumbers have been growing steadily over the years with an estimated one (m) million birds arriving at the wetlands, according to Zargar.\u003cbr/\u003e\"We are receiving more than a million migratory birds which are abiding at all the water bodies in the valley of Kashmir during winter migration period.\"\u003cbr/\u003eLocated north of Srinagar, the summer capital of Indian-controlled Kashmir, the wetlands are under increasing threat from human settlements which are getting closer and closer to the reserve.\u003cbr/\u003eEnvironmental activists say the wetlands are shrinking due to human habitation and will affect the annual migration of the birds. \u003cbr/\u003eThe diversion of canals to carry floodwater from human settlements into the wetlands has caused them to shrink..\u003cbr/\u003eCanals carry tons of silt which build up in the wetlands reducing the size of the bodies of water.\u003cbr/\u003eInternational charity Mercy Corps has been working to preserve the ecologically fragile regions in the Kashmir Valley.\u003cbr/\u003eKashmir director of the group Usman Ahmad says any interference with the wetlands is a hazard.\u003cbr/\u003e\"I think that flood channels and any sort of fluid that comes into the wetland, especially Hokersar and other places is not natural to that environment.
