Sigi and Sylvia holding each other looking at memorial on the beach, then walking around the tree and sitting down\u003cbr/\u003eWhen Silvia Gsteu cut short her Christmas holiday in Thailand last year to deliver a premature baby back home in Austria, she didn't know it was the last time she would see three friends she left behind.\u003cbr/\u003eGsteu and her husband, Sigi, were planning a tropical Christmas celebration with a group of friends at the Andaman Beach Resort in Khao Lak but Gsteu is a midwife and she was called back to Austria because of her job. \u003cbr/\u003eTen days later, a massive wall of water smashed into the beach resort and carried away three of the couple's closest friends.\u003cbr/\u003eOn Sunday morning, the couple lit candles to remember their friends and put two simple wooden plaques with their names on underneath a lone pine tree on the beach.\u003cbr/\u003eOther mourners left photographs and flowers at the tree by other mourners showed the widespread grief and suffering. \u003cbr/\u003eToday, a damaged footbridge is all that remains at the once idyllic Andaman Beach Resort. \u003cbr/\u003ePiles of concrete and paving tiles litter the flat, sandy plain where 75 bungalows once stood, all swept away in the waves.\u003cbr/\u003eRecalling the area before the disaster, Sigi Gsteu sighed and said: \"Before the tsunami, we had paradise here. The tsunami took (that) paradise from us.\"\u003cbr/\u003eIn the days immediately following the disaster, the Gsteus desperately sought information about their friends and even tried to return to Thailand to look for them, but were advised not to by Austrian authorities.\u003cbr/\u003eFor months they waited for news of their best friend, 56-year-old Hubert Mathis, but heard nothing.\u003cbr/\u003eIn May, Mathis's body was formally identified by DNA and returned to Austria, where family and friends held a special memorial.\u003cbr/\u003eSince the disaster, the Gsteus have been supporting a local community with donations of essential goods such as rice, cooking\u003cbr/\u003eoil, soap and toothpaste.\u003cbr/\u003eThey say the tsunami has changed the appearance and feel
