Evacuees eating\u003cbr/\u003eAlmost all of the 47-thousand residents living on the slopes of a rumbling volcano in the central Philippines have now moved to emergency shelters.\u003cbr/\u003eLava and earthquakes on Tuesday heralded what officials say could be a major eruption.\u003cbr/\u003eLow clouds obscured visibility of the smouldering 8,070-foot (2,460-metre) Mayon, towering over coconut farms and rice paddies in coastal Albay province.\u003cbr/\u003eChief state volcanologist Renato Solidum warned that a hazardous eruption could happen either today or within the next few days, adding that an eruption also may not happen.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Currently the seismic activity is becoming more intense than in previous days,\" he said, but he could not predict with 100 per cent accuracy.\u003cbr/\u003eAsh columns were seen rising during a cloud break and Solidum said his team recorded 1,266 volcanic quakes in the last 24 hours, down from nearly 2,000 the previous day. He said that while the quakes were fewer, they were larger.\u003cbr/\u003eThe emission of sulphur dioxide - an indication of magma rising inside the volcano - was measured at 6,530 tonnes per day, slightly less than 7,000 tonnes on Sunday, but still very high, Solidum said. The normal gas emission is 500 tonnes per day.\u003cbr/\u003eIn the past week, more than 45 thousand residents living in a five-mile (eight-kilometre) zone around Mayon have been transported in army trucks to school buildings and gymnasiums in and around the provincial capital of Legazpi, where they were given sleeping mats and food supplies to last them through Christmas holidays, according to disaster management officials.\u003cbr/\u003eOn Tuesday, soldiers, some dressed in festive Santa hats, distributed supplies to the evacuees.\u003cbr/\u003eOne evacuee, Charie Ador, was disappointed her family would not be able to celebrate Christmas.\u003cbr/\u003e\"But it's OK,\" she said with a smile, \"at least there is food here from donations.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSome of about two-thousand remaining farmers and their families living on the edge of the exclusion zone have already evacuated their homes three times but keep on returning to check on their livestock and vegetable farms, officials said.\u003cbr/\u003eArmy troops and police were patrolling inside the danger zone to persuade the holdouts to move to a safe distance. \u003cbr/\u003eAuthorities said they were working on an evacuation centre for farm animals.\u003cbr/\u003eScientists have raised Mayon's alert level to one step below a hazardous eruption. \u003cbr/\u003eThe only higher level is when a major eruption is in progress. \u003cbr/\u003eRed hot lava flows had reached three miles (five kilometres) from the crater accompanied by booming and rumbling sounds, said the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology.\u003cbr/\u003eExperts fear a major eruption could trigger pyroclastic flows - superheated gas and volcanic debris that race down the slopes at high speeds, incinerating or vaporising everything in their path. \u003cbr/\u003eMore extensive explosions of ash could drift toward nearby towns and cities, including Legazpi, about nine miles (15 kilometres) away.\u003cbr/\u003eIn Mayon's other eruptions in recent years, pyroclastic flows reached up to four miles (six kilometres) from the crater.\u003cbr/\u003eMayon has erupted nearly 40 times over 400 years.  \u003cbr/\u003eAbout 30,000 people were moved during the last eruption in 2006. \u003cbr/\u003eAn eruption in 1993 killed 79 people.\u003cbr/\u003eThe first recorded eruption was in 1616;
