Didier Pierson watching juice from grapes dripping out of press\u003cbr/\u003eBelgian authorities announced recently (Jan 10, 2008) that they have destroyed a shipment of more than 3,000 bottles of California-made sparkling\u003cbr/\u003ewine as part of a New Year's crackdown on illegally labelled Champagne.\u003cbr/\u003eIn the European Union and in non-EU nations that recognize label of origin rules, Champagne can only come from the region of the same name in northern France.\u003cbr/\u003eBut as the climate in Britain becomes steadily warmer, vineyards are becomming ever more common across southern England. \u003cbr/\u003eParts of the county of Hampshire boast a chalky soil similar to that in France's Champagne region and now one French champagne maker has moved to the UK to bring his expertise to the production of 'English sparkling wine'. \u003cbr/\u003eChampagne lovers in the UK can look forward to an ever growing and improving selection of 'English sparkling wine'. \u003cbr/\u003eWine growers hope that one day 'English sparkling wine' will rival French champagne in terms of quantity and quality. \u003cbr/\u003eDidier Pierson has been a champagne producer in France for the last twenty years. \u003cbr/\u003eBut inspired by the average increase in temperatures in the UK, he has moved to Hampshire to try to produce similar quality wine on the county's chalky soil. \u003cbr/\u003ePierson planted vines in Hampshire, two years ago, the first 'champenoise' (champagne maker) to do so.\u003cbr/\u003ePierson believes that the skills he has acquired in twenty years of champagne making can be exported successfully to England.\u003cbr/\u003eHis vines have now produced their first grapes, both Pinot Noir and Chardonnay varieties, which are also used in France in the making of champagne. \u003cbr/\u003ePierson says that champagne making is in his blood and he has a lot of experience in creating good sparkling wines. \u003cbr/\u003eHe says that the climate and soil in Hampshire are very similar to that of the Champagne region of France. \u003cbr/\u003eWine expert Stephen Skelton agrees. \u003cbr/\u003eHe says the best wines that the UK can offer are as good as some of the great French champagnes. \u003cbr/\u003eDidier is adhering strictly to the traditional champagne producing practice, the 'methode champenoise'.\u003cbr/\u003eHe brought a champagne press over to England for the grape crushing.\u003cbr/\u003eAlthough the sparkling wine Didier eventually produces may be of an excellent quality, one thing he will not be permitted to call it is 'champagne'.\u003cbr/\u003eOnly sparkling wine from the Champagne region in France is permitted to bear this title. \u003cbr/\u003eThe question remains does 'English Sparkling Wine' need re-branding if it is ever to take on champagne. Should it be given a different name?\u003cbr/\u003eStephen Skelton doesn't believe this is necessary. \u003cbr/\u003eHe says no one will agree on one name and other sparkling wine producing countries have successfully marketed their products as 'sparkling wine'. \u003cbr/\u003eDidier now has a long three year wait for the wine to mature and develop its bubbles, to discover if indeed his champagne
