Ground shot of shops connected with generators\u003cbr/\u003eA stand-off between Egypt and Gaza's Hamas government has produced the worst energy crisis in years, officials say. \u003cbr/\u003eGazans are enduring 18-hour-a-day blackouts, fuel is running low and people are forced to stand in line for hours in order to fill their jerry cans.\u003cbr/\u003eEven hospital back-up generators are in danger of running out of fuel, raw sewage is pouring into the Mediterranean due to the lack of power for the pumps and petrol stations have shut down, cars are now off the streets, and large crowds fight over a few public taxis.\u003cbr/\u003eThe shortages of fuel and electricity, which have escalated over the past two months, infuriate ordinary Gazans who say their basic needs are being sacrificed for politics.\u003cbr/\u003eHamas wants to leverage the crisis into pressuring Egypt to open a direct trade route with Gaza, which in turn would stabilise the Islamic militants' rule over the territory they seized by force in 2007 from Western-backed Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas.\u003cbr/\u003eEgypt refuses to open such a cargo crossing because it wants to keep Gaza at arms' length and not absolve Israel from what much of the world views as the Jewish state's continued responsibility for the territory. \u003cbr/\u003eIsrael withdrew from Gaza in 2005, after a 38-year military occupation, but continues to control access by air, land and sea.\u003cbr/\u003eAfter the Hamas takeover in 2007, Israel and Egypt imposed a border blockade on Gaza to try to dislodge the new rulers. \u003cbr/\u003eSince the fall of Egypt's staunchly pro-Western President Hosni Mubarak more than a year ago, Egypt has eased restrictions on passenger traffic to and from Gaza through the Rafah crossing, but has refused to open a cargo route into the territory. Instead, it largely turned a blind eye to smuggling of fuel, cement and other vital supplies shipped through hundreds of border tunnels.\u003cbr/\u003eMore than a year ago, the Hamas government decided to use smuggled fuel to run the territory's only power plant, rather than paying for more expensive fuel coming through an Israeli cargo crossing with Gaza. The plant provides 60 percent of Gaza's electricity.  In recent days, no smuggled fuel has reached Gaza.\u003cbr/\u003eToday Hamas is facing growing discontent and is bound to suffer serious political damage if it cannot come up with a solution
